thoughts on the 1988 soarer? Sun, 18 August 2002 06:44 Go to next message

A mate of mine just bought one of these single turbo 5speed beasts and i was just wondering if anyone knows any good/bad points that people have found with the car.

Do these have 7M's in them?- if so, dont these motors have gasket probs?

Thanks
Ben

PS- its a coupe'

They are like a MA70 Supra mechanically, but more square looking.
They also have the 7m-gte (I think that some came out with the 1g-gte) with all the usual head gasket problems. A bit of a luxo barge - but some people would call a Supra that. If it has TEMS shaok absorbers - they are more than likely worn out.

Try gary's site if you want more Soarer info.
He has a 7M powered one too.
He'll hate your mate though, he has the auto and the manuals are rarer than hen's teeth. I'm thinking it may even be a retrofit.

Overall they aren't a bad car.
Built pretty well, digital dashes hardly fail and the doors don't have the sagging problem that the 80 series do.
Manual 7M will go pretty well too.
Any probs with 7M's are well known and the fix is as simple as torqueing up the headbolts a bit more.

Oh and I agree with jza70-mel - ditch the tems and get normal springs/shocks much less hassle.

I have a 5-speed 1G-GTE version with factory sports suspension and it hasn't missed a beat in 3 years - could go a bit harder though. Rolling

The 7M-GTE in the Soarer only came in auto.. so it is certainly a retrofit.. only the 1G came in a 5 speed manual. I would certainly prefer a manual in mine..

Thanks for the link to my site above.. Smile

Gasket problems? Mine went.. but it is more of a weak point then a problem.. fix it properly and treat it right... mine had done 120000k's when it happened.

Heavy for it's size, but goes well and fairly trouble free.

i have a 89 mz20 , had it four about 5 mnths now been off the road for nearly 3!
the head gasket ( no suprises!) began a slow leak , about 3mnths ago , began heating up then over a mnth got progressivly worse untill i couldnt go about ten min under 2500rpm, without pissing about 1ltr of water out the overflow!
the engines out and head off, the the only problem with the copper gasket appears to be a small leak in cylinder 5 joining the cylinder to the water jacket. im looking at rebuilding the engine and getting a manual half cut, but having some fun finding one. but its still the schmickest car ! and wouldnt give it up! ( unless it was for a working man) there easy to get power out of ( as long as u keep the gasket down), and they handle beautifully. like driving ur lounge around the streets , but with climate control!
