I recently had my first run-in with a 1JZ conversion ...

http://esteban.meridiantech.com.au/misc/toymods/10 0_1521.JPG

... '98 VVTi single turbo 1JZ-GTE into a VL (dont ask) ...

and I was surprised by the teensy size of the exhaust ports ! not to mention the exhaust manifold to the turbo. The stock exhause manifold even has welded in expansion joints (dont know if this is unusual) I assume the turbo is another CT26 incarnation? - non twin entry, but the manifold at least joins the 3 tp 6 cyls directly before the exhaust wheel. Sorry I didnt snap a pic, but the opportunity is still available for tomorrow-ish.

To me it seems this engine has heaps of potential, but is factory tailored for more sedate duties. Cant wait to unleash the beast in such a light car!

It's almost as if the std exhaust manifold is a factory restrictor (or perhaps it explains that meaty 380nm+something of low-down torque?) Hopefully we can get the bitch going in stock trim, im really keen to see how toyotas late model (well later than anything i usually play with) stock engines perform...

Any thoughts/experiences?

Yes, all JZ engines have small exhaust ports and restrictive manifolds. The purpose of this is to keep exhaust gas velocity high, thus encouraging quick spool-up. That's the reason a 1JZ is amazingly torquey for a 2.5 litre engine.

And yes, there are plenty of gains to be had by opening up those ports and replacing the stock manifolding with something a bit bigger.

Hey Esteban

I fitted a 1JZGTE into a VL two years ago and have almost completed a 1JZGTE VVTi into a Lexus IS200. Come up to Toowoomba some day if you want to have a look.

The VL was an awesome performer in full flight. You will have fun with it.

Hi there Esteban, December last year finished fitting a VVTI 1JZ-GTE into an RA23 Celica. Initial dyno run without any modifications, and 10 psi boost saw, 170Kw@ wheels via W58 manual box.

Masses of FUN! FUN! FUN!

regards Chuck.
