1JZGTE turbo wheels? steel or ceramic. Wed, 31 March 2004 01:15 Go to next message
hey guys just a quick question,

did the 1j come with steel or ceramic turbo wheels? ive been told that my turbo wheels are steel, by the previous owner.

and i was just a little curious as to weather it would be an aftermarket job, or standard?

ive also been told that the ceramic turbos have a habit of shitting them selves at around 15psi, im currently running there abouts.

the guy a bought the car off said that he used to boost at around 18 psi... but turned it down a tad so i didnt boost into a gutter or anything...

if someone could shed some light on this id be very greatfull!
oh the car is a JZA70 aero top if that helps.
thanks heaps
chris

Ceramic wheels were standard on the 1jz - but it's common to replace them with steel wheels from a ct9 (starlet) turbo, or various other steel wheel combinations.

There's a lot of argumnets about whether or not the ceramic ones shit themselves at high boost - but apparently many people have been running ceramic wheels with twin dump pipes at 16 psi without failure.

I think at 18psi you'd be getting beyond the efficiency range of the turbos anyway - unless they've been hi-flowed or further modified.

I wouldnt say swapping them for steels is a common practice, although it is done. I also wouldnt trust the previous owner when he says he had them converted.

I didn't mean that people commnly replaced them (coz it's not cheap), rather that when replacing it was common to use CT9 turbine wheels. Smile

I wouldn't trust that the wheels are steel either until you've seen them! Nevertheless, not boosting it to 18 psi is a good idea - keep it below 15 until you're sure of what's going on.

in the jza70 wasnt the aus spec version brought out with ct12b turbos, that have steel wheels, rather then the jap spec with the ct12a turbos with ceramic wheels ??

i have a jzx90 chaser with 2.5inch dump pipes and im running 15-16psi with no dramas.

There was no Aus spec jza70 - it was never imported here. I think you've got it confused with the jza80 (current supras). They have CT12b turbos and jap spec was ceramic wheels whereas US-spec was steel.

Most people with dump pipes run 15-16psi no dramas. I think it is running that boost pressure with stock dumps increase the chance of failure... but I'm no expert on this.
