Remote Oil Filter for 4AGE 20 Valve ?? Thu, 01 April 2004 06:27 Go to next message
Hi all,

I need to 'shorten' the oil filter on my 20 Valve 4AGE to allow for some 2" custom extractors. My current extractor design is setup to make all 4 primaries the same length but unfortunately, they now run through the standard factory oil filter. Crying or Very Sad

I need to shorten the filter by about 50mm so was thinking of either installing a 90 degree filter adaptor, finding a shorter after market filter adaptor block, or going for a remote filter setup.

Does anyone have any simple ideas of how I could reduce the amount that the filter and stock adaptors 'stick out' from the engine block ? The factory filter blocks are quite long. Are there shorter after market ones available ?

Thanks,

Julian...

what oil filter do you use now? you could try a z386 they suit most toyota's and are really small(but obviously hold a smaller amount of oil), other than that try wholesale performance for a filter relocation kit. or a local hi-po engine rebiulder, (or engineer) can shorten the filter for you.

Freak the last 20 valve block i looked at had the same oil filter sandwhich plate set-up as a 4age 16 valve. i dont know if all 20 valves are the same though?.
you could do like the later 4agze engines and put the oil filter directly to the block. i have done this with my 4agte, i used the bolt from the oil filter sandwhich bit that the oil filter screwed onto.

I just bought a remote oil filter kit with a cooler as well for my 4agte.

Got mine from earls. Good stuff Smile not too expensive either.

Get a lot of clearance as well. might be worth a look.

My 2 cents........

Always go the remote filter, because even if you can stuff a filter in there, you'll swear and curse every time you try and change the thing, especially if things are a bit warm Evil or Very Mad

Sorry to dig this up guys, but can someone please confirm that it is definately not a problem to run the oil filter straight on the block? I also have the problem of extractors fouling on the filter, but have taken the bolt off the 4AC and put that in the 20V block and just screwed on the filter straight to the block. What does that extension that the filter normally screws onto do anyway? Is it for cooling?

Cheers.

normally the sandwich plate b/w the oil filter and the block had two outlets which then go to an oil cooler - not sure on the implications on running a 4AGE without an oil cooler, i figure slightly cooler oil = longer lasting engine.

Thanks Grega,

There are no outlets that I can see. all it appears to do is space the filter further from the block. I will be running an oil cooler in the future, but for now to get the engine running, I am assuming that screwing the filter straight to the block will not pose any problems regarding oil filtering/distribution. Is this correct?

Hey slut, how's it going mate??? Smile
I've been meaning to give you call.....

Yeah there's no problem running an oil filter straight off the block, that's how my rwd 4AGE always was. I'd be interested to see this spacer, is it finned or have any other note worthy features? Or is it just a plain block, with an o'ring one side & a machined mating surface the other?

'sup Perm.... I mean.... Worm....

It's hard to explain, but it doesn't have any fins or anything. It really just appears to be a spacer, as it has the hole through the middle, and elongated holes around the edge for the oil to run through. Apart from that, there's nothing that looks like it actually does anything.

The filter seems to mate up fine with the 4AC bolt/pipe thing with the block so I'm sure it will do until I get a remote filter/cooler set up.

And yeah, give me a call you swine! hehehe

my 2c - id just move it because i wouldnt want the oil filter that close to the exhaust (not for safety, jsut cos i dont like the idea of overheated oil)

parts to move it are not that expensive

$50 sandwich plate
$80 remote mount base
$100 lines and fittings

plus you have the added bonus if you use braided lines and earls/speedflow fittings that your engine bay will look all pretty

agree with pro_ke - but its the braided line and speedflow fittings that cost a bomb...the straight speedflow fittings are ok its the curved ones at 30 odd bucks each which get me.

oh and pushlock hose, 25 per metre dash 8.

Thanks for your help guys. I think I will run it straight on the block for now just to get the engine running and check if it's ok (before warranty runs out!) as it has an acceptable amount of room between the headers and filter. Then I'll get the remote set up done properly with braided lines etc before I take it for a right thrashing.

Cheers.
