different wheel offsets Thu, 01 April 2004 23:20 Go to next message
Just wondering if it will cause any problems if the 2 fronts wheels run different offset? On dad's Prado he wants to be able to use the wheels off the camper trailer as spares, but they seem to stick out about 20mm further ie. im guessing different offset.
Scrubing the guards isn't really a problem due to being raised.

Just not sure if it can affect steering or anything

Not recommended !
Particular on the front !
You will change the steering and suspension geometry and increase the load on the wheel bearings. Steering will be heavier (but you have P/S) and handling will be affected for the worse.
If you must use the camper trailer wheels, only ever fit them on the rear axle, so when you get the first front tyre puncture, fit the original spare, 2nd front puncture - put a rear on the front and the camper trailer rim becomes the new spare, an so on.
(ie. Feed your front with original wheels for as long as possible).
Mitch.

Thanks for that.
He will probably buy 3 matching prado rims to put on the camper then.

No worries.
My step-father went through exactly this about 8 years ago with his Toyota Blizzard and camper trailer. He also ended up getting (four) matching rims from a wrecker, in this case.
Trailer axle wheel bearings are not as 'sensitive' to offset as cars are, they generally carry less load, travel in straight lines, and do not bounce up and down as much as a vehicles suspension.
