I know you're probably not supposed to run a full synthetic oil in such an old engine, at least thats what people tell me. I decided to give it a go, and tried the Castrol Magnatec and I was blown away with the difference it made compared to the oil my mechanic was using.
How much of it came down to a synthetic, how much of it came down to its rating and how much was because of its formula I don't know, but the way my car behaves nicer, its going in again in a couple of 100 k's.

yeah i used magnatec in my 18rc and it had a big difference in power only thing is after it got about a month old it started to blow smoke so i moved to the shell sport as its nice and thick and now it only ever blows smoke from simply the amount of fuel being chucked into the engine no oil smoke
and with the magnatic i lost oil preassure as the engine got hot but with the shell sport it helped keep the engine cooler and no loss in oil preasure

I use Pennzoil 'for older engines' for my RA60. Don't know the exact name, but it shouldn't be too hard to track down.

The main thing is just don't use an oil that's too thin since it'll just run through all the huge gaps in the engine (old school engines don't have tight tolerances like modern engines). I've been told Magnetec is pretty good.

Magnatec is 10W-40 right?
that means its quite thin right? but ok for the celica?
if not then does anyone have an opinion on GTX2 or GTX3?
thanks

I havent had any problems with the thing and its just completed 5000km. Not very long, but still. It is pretty thin, but its not as thin when you compare it to say...some of the Mobil1 range.

Also forgot to mention before i used magnatec i sent an email to castrol asking them what they think i should use and i got a phone call from a guy at castrol a few days later telling me all about it and he recommended magnatec for my engine and to come to think of it is was fine for ages but then started to blow smoke when it got a bit older but i ended up finding out that was due to oil coming out of the rocker cover pipe which leads into the intake but i now have an oil catch can to stop that from happening so i think i might go back to magnatec next oil change as i like the power the engine had while using it and when it was new oil it gave the exhaust a nice smell for some reason

Umm, I didn't replace any sorta gasket when I did mine. Mine did blow smoke when I first changed it...but I did put a little too much, after getting it back to the correct level...all was good!

i've never changed the seal on my sump plug and it never leaks i guess just make sure the actual seal isn't broken before you put it back on, but i am thinking that if u have never serviced it before then maybe its time for you to change the fuel filter and coolant whilst your at it, possibly check your air filter as well, spark plugs, ignition points gee it never ends, welcome to the world of servicing a car

yeah I'm in the process of doing everything now. think i might do the fuel filter too tommorrow. coolant on the weekend maybe. gooing a big drive through the black spur and woods point on the weekend with some friends so the celica needs to be running sweet
BTW my temp gauge doesnt really move (maybe 2-3mm), just sits on 'cold' all the time.... instrument failure im guessing?

mine would also only move a couple of mm, but then i went to install another temp guage in the car so i disconnected the standard one and got rid of the wire completly yet sometimes it goes up half or or to the red, when its not even connected

Regarding timing, it should all be written down on the sticker under the bonnet if it's still there. Our specs seems a bit different to the US ones (ie Hayes manual)
Off the top of my head (for my 22RE), the idle speed should be 650, you pull the 2 vac lines off the dizzy and, at 800 revs, the timing shoud be set to 5* BTDC. I set it 3* advanced, ie at 8* as per a guy on the OCC lists recommendation.
This is for the 22RE though, so it might not help at all.

I'm pretty sure, the Toyota manual says it should be 5 for some particular years, and 8 for others. Mine is set to just over 10, but mine lives on a diet of Ultimate 98. I think the 8 was more correct.
