Alternator charge wire fuse? Sun, 04 April 2004 23:30 Go to next message
Hello, in my mates '75 lancer we've done a lot of custom wiring and ran into a bit of a problem.

The current setup is...

Large heavy duty wire direct from battery in the boot to starter motor.

Another heavy duty wire from the battery to a fused distribution block near the dash. This is one of the ones that hold the large glass fuses, i think mainly used in car audio setups.

From here everything gets its power, ecu, msd, body loom etc. Also the alternator charge wire comes into here.

Originally had a 60amp fuse in the distribution block for the alternator charge, but this would blow every now and then. So ended up putting the charge wire on the non-fused side of the distribution block and put a 100amp trip switch thing on the charge wire, but now and then it still trips it.

Is 100amp enough for the charge wire? The alternator is from a Mitsubishi Gallant VR4. Or do we need more than 100amp? My first thought was it might be shorting out somewhere and blowing the fuse but it doesn't appear to be the case. It is charging spot on at 13.8v. Any suggestions on fusing this wire?

Thanks
Joel
