What brake pads should i get for my Rav4? Mon, 05 April 2004 02:36 Go to next message
I need new pads for the rav4 ('98 - old model). It gets used for a fair bit of boat-towing (Its a 15' fibreglass - so its a medium sized boat).

I've done my research and EBC greenstuff seems to be the ultimate way to go. But here are some of my options:

$70 - EBC Street Kevlar - DP964
$145 - EBC 6000 Series 4x4 (Greenstuff) - DP6964
$7 shipping
-10% discount for being charming Smile

What should i get? Are the $70 really crap? Are the $145 ones really that much better?

In a Rav4, I'd simply be using the standard style pads. If you're worried about temperature and overheating the pads from towing, I'd learn to slow down on the gearbox, and start using forethought when approaching braking situations.

You really reckon standard pads are any good? A lot of the people here seem to fly in the face of that - i quote 'I'd rather use cardboard than standard pads' - i'm curious to hear your reasoning.

It's a Rav4, not a F1 car, and given it's duties and capabilities, standard pads will be fine for your application, anything more I feel will be a waste of money. Unfortunately, of late, the forums seem to have been filled with alot of keyboard warriors who can tell you anything they read, but have very little real world experience, and for this reason, any one who tells you upgraded brake pads in a Rav4 will improve your car, I feel is making more assumption than factual statement. If standard pads were not up to the job for everyday driving (including towing), they would not be sold, given the litigous and capricious world we live in today.

Having said all that, if you tow a tonne down a hill in fifth gear using your brakes to slow down, yes, you'll cook the standard pads, as you also will the upgraded jobbies, but this says nothing of the correct way to drive a laiden car anyway.

Okay.... well the old ones never faded, its just that they didn't seem to grip too well. Maybe all they need is a good bleed... anyway i'll keep u posted.

Just got the new brakes on them. I got the cheaper of the EBC pads ($80) and they seem to be good so far...
