I believe the main difference is the use of INK vs TONER

which is more affordable in the long run ?

Inkjets are more versatile and cheaper to run.

But laser printers have much better quality. And you don't need to wait for the ink to dry.

I'm a laser man myself. Inkjets are nice, you can print up photos and T-shirt transfers and a whole host of things, but you just can't beat the quality of a laser.

thats the percentage of ink coverage on the area of the paper per print.

they usually say it'll do X amount of prints at 5% ink coverage per page.

so its prolly 2500 pages at 5% ink coverage for the samsung

can anyone shed light on fusers and fuser kits and if they are the same as the drum?

hey rob... $112 for 2500 pages at 5% is not that cheap at all .... almost the same as what u get out of inkjet (pirated cartridges)

I went to a shop down the road and i have been convinced to go for a reconditioned lexmark ... $450 ... incl toner...
for this particular model, the toner replacements cost $220 for 17,000 pages Smiley =

$450 Razz

get that one i showed you its a photo copier, scanner and printer all in one (colour), i think the inks only like $30 to replace

so it was like $170

which means you could get nearly 10 ink refils as well for the $450 your willing to spend

up to you dude but i've worked in many offices and toner printers sux IMO

happy printing

I did the figures about 4 years ago, however, it worked out that the laser was far better in the long term, (price-wise, let alone the quality).

I bought a Panasonic laser printer 12 years ago (cheapest on the market at $1000 back then). It has printed innumerable pages and is still going strong.

Yup. I bought two LaserJet 6Ls about 7-8 years ago (one for me and one for the woman) and I can't for the life of me remember having to change the toner cartridge...

Rob, no idea about your questions. Smile

It all really depends on what application you are using it for. The occaisional print, an inkjet is fine. But you need to use them every now and then as the ink will dry up. I don't think lasers have this prob, give the catridge a shake and all is good.

Colour lasers are generally pretty expensive, especially decent ones. But if you do a lot of printing and want quality, these are the go.

If only needing black and white, and you do a lot of printing, a laser is definately the go, but unsure of what sort of quality you would get for $450. We have a couple of Lexmark's at work, 4 years old and do a fair bit of printing (i work at a school), they are still printing like new. Of course they were about $1500 or something like that to initially purchase.

As for drum replacement requirements i think it would differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, but definately not every toner cartridge. More likely to be after 50,000 or 100,000 (may even be more) pages, also depending on the printer quality.

I'd also be a bit dubious of a re-conditioned printer, but thats just a personal opinion. At least find out what has been replaced in the reconditioning process. Generally parts in that process will outway the resale value.

I wouldn't take this info as gospel, i'm just going off the top of my head. All in all, i'd find a few printers in your price range that you like and look up the information on the web and compare.

Apart from that happy shopping.

Leon

Have to agree with you here. Cheap to maintain compared to most other colour lasers, and the HP1500L is down to about $900 at the moment. Print quality is amazing (I don't own one, just some clients own them).
