W58 gearbox ratios Mon, 05 April 2004 17:09 Go to next message
Hey Dudes.
I have a mk3 Supra with a w58 gearbox. In 5th gear at 110 kph I'm doing 3200 rpm. I have no idea why Toyota would make a GT car with such petrol guzzling rpm's at cruising speed. Anyway, I want to drop the revs down to around 2500 rpm. Any ideas on if this can be done, correct ratios and availability of gearing?

Use a diff with 28% taller gearing.

What is your diff ratio? Should be on the build plate.

I'm surprised by this because the W58 g/box already has a more highly over-driven 5th gear in compariosn with the W57, 0.86 to 0.78, just for that reason you have given. I suspect a diff ratio change here.
Mitch.

NA MA70's had diff ratios as low as 4.3:1, which could definitely explain this situation. Is your Supra a local or JDM model?

On this subject, I have a JZA80 W58, with the Altezza LSD, I think the Ratio is 4.11, originally hooked up to the IS200 6 Speed, will this effect gearing, making it better or worse? And also the speedo, will it be out?

Cheers!!

NA JZA80's came with a 4.0:1 diff ratio, so your gearbox should work well with a 4.1:1 ratio. Speedo will probably be slightly affected, but this depends on the tyre diameter as well as the final drive ratio.
