Cressida GX60 steering box, has some freeplay in it. How much more can i adjust before something goes wrong

if you adjust it so that there is no play, it will bind on either side since it is worn in the center.
so just adjust it tight enough so that IT DOESN'T BIND or feel tight through out its travel - lock to lock.
when done, the castor should still easily center/return the steering wheel, else you've got it too tight or there are chipped teeth causing it to hang.
