Steering issue Wed, 07 April 2004 14:08 Go to next message
Of late i have noticed that the toe adjustment of the steering on my ra23 has become misaligned. After checking all my ball joints, which i thought to be the problem i have come up with no explination as to how or why this is happening, and it seems to come in and out of aligment aswell. Any1 have any thoughts on the subject.

When your driving, well atleast it feels like it is comming in and out, although i have checked everything and it all seems tight. So i am at a loss to figure out wat it is, even the adjustment on the tie rods looks the same.

Doesnt float by no means, but it sort of goes from side to side, making the car a handful to keep on the road.

do you mean tramlining where the car wants to follow grooves in the road?

If this is the case, have you recently changed tyres at the front? have you had a wheel alignment done?

Ah, had the tyres changed a while ago and the wheel alignment was also done bout 3 months ago, from wat it looks like with a visual inspection of the car is that one wheel is turned in toed in more than the other. Having not hit anything and nothing is loose and it doesnt appear the the tie rods have just adjusted themselves, i am at a loss to explain it, just wondering if any1 esle has had the same issue or a suggestion as to wat the problem is.
Cheers

can be one of a few things
it could be some slop in the steering box,
the wheel alignment might not be adjusted properly (to much toe in)
not enuff caster (wheel allignment problem)
my celica does it on the highway.. turned out it isnt enough caster... alot of old cars are like that.
drive it.. turn the wheel and if it sticks and pulls the side you turned it ,it could be a tight ball joint and or idler arm as well.
