Head Unit Pre out Sat, 10 April 2004 06:05 Go to next message
Hey guys,

I have just bought a high to low level converter from Jaycar. I am trying to run an amp (which is connected to a sub) using my factory head unit (brand new factory corolla deck in a 1988 toyota Supra). I am Car audio illiterate and am wondering if someone with more knowledge than me can tell me what it is exactly that i need to do to get this up and running. In simplest terms would be appreciated. If you would rather PM or email r.moore@bigpond.net.au that would be fine.

Thx in advance,

Russ.

Well woddaya really need to know? Just connect all the wires to the places they are marked, do a good job with all the wiring, and it should be fine. What part is confusing you the most?

Well,

From the converter are four speaker wires. What exactly do I wire them in to?

Looking at this pic
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/products_uploaded/productLarge_56.jpg

It seems to tell you exactly what to wire where on the top.

Yea,

The only reason I ask is because I have done as it says on the converter but it seems not to have worked. ALthough my amp light is not coming on at all, I wonder if something is wrong with it.

Thx very much for that site, FWDCelica.

Unfortunately the Tech Doc relating to my problem is "not yet available". Bummer!

Still at a loss.

Ok guys,

I figured out the problem. Quite embarassing actually.

The remote wire for the amp was left loose in the back of the head unit area, HEHE.

So where exactly does this need to go now guys?

Sorry for wasting your time when it was something so simple.

Cheers,
Russ.

If the headunit has an amp wire, or you can use accessories off the car. You might be able to use the electric antenna wire from the headunit also but someone might want to confirm that.

mate i've never used one of these b4 but let me c if i can help you

ok ur factory HU is old and usually dont have rca preout or remote wire. so u have to use ur speaker wires and put it thru a convertor. other side of the convertor should be rca out and now u can connect rcas to ur amp and drive the sub. some amp, or most modern amps these days allow for speaker wire input so u dont even need this convertor and just plug speaker wires straight to the amp, check ur amp first

so from the picture, the 4 wires connects to the 4 speaker wires on ur HU

Thx for all the replies and help guys,

I got the problem sorted out and ended up wiring the remote wire from the amp into the power antenna wire as suggested by Callifo. Seems to be working fine.

At least I have learnt something about car audio. Now I can drive the Supra whilst listening to some decent sounding tunes. Well, if you put aside the droning exhuast note!

Thx again,
Russ.
