Magnets on Oil Filters Sat, 10 April 2004 12:25 Go to next message
Do any of you guys (or girls) have any first hand knowlege of sticking a big magnet on your oil filter?
There are several products now available (MRT, Beartrap) that are claiming to trap small magnetic particles from your oil as it goes through your oil filter (and presumably doesn't get filtered). The process is similar to the magnetic diff sump plug.
It sounds like a cheap mod to get that 0.001% that we all go after Laughing

Do racers for example use this device?
What about just getting a great big speaker magnet?

i've been using 2 hard drive magnets for a while...

it definitely does trap small metal particles in there, thats for sure..
i cut open the first filter i used the magnets with.. kinda scary too! all that metal in there... Rolling Eyes

anyways, it does work.. small magnets spread out i think would be better.. you can get good strong ones from
http://www.magneticforce.com.au/

maybe $1 each for about 8mm dia x5mm, which is big enough.. stick maybe 10 around the base and then cut open filter at next change and see what happened Wink

http://www.magneticforce.com.au/neodymium.htm

they are at Mascot too...

Cya, STewart

oh, i doubt there's any performance benefit, but it might just keep oil a bit cleaner for longer and reduce wear slightly.... suuuure.. for $10, you can't really go wrong Wink it WILL trap the ferrous particles.. not any alloy of soft metal ones tho... but most metal comes from the bores i think... could be quite good for running in methinks...

um, check your sump plug! i know some yota sump plugs i've seen have had magnets actually in the middle of the plug

and yes they are quite a good idea. i like the idea of magnets on the oil filter - i reckon thats a good idea. though depending on your motor and how old it is, might be an idea to stick with oil/filter every 5000km....
