I have a friend who's been running his leaded car on optimax (PULP), thinking that it had hardened valve seats, which it doesn't. What damage can be done, and what are the symptons?
Thanks
p.s. no, it's not me, my car runs fine on optimax

What I'v seen after reconditioning heads for a couple of years is this new LRP is more damaging to the valves than PULP .

2T's have hardened valve seats, so definitely run it on ULP.

Be careful, i know some sites have said my engine (18R) has hardened valve seats, but it doesnt. From memory only the 18R-C and 18R-G's had hardened valve seats.
The same could apply to 2T's as they are around the same age.

i run my 2T on PULP - no issues (yet)
that said the only issue from running a leaded car on PULP is the noxious fumes due to no cat and hammering of the valve seats.

The 18R is a different case as it has a cast iron cylinder head. The 2T has an alloy head so it definitely has hardened valve seats; you can't seat the valves in bare alloy!
A stock 2T will run fine as is on PULP, but you may experience detonation if you run regular ULP (unlikely, but possible). Try both and see how it runs.

I'm not sure about this, but I think that LRP is 97 RON, PULP is 95RON, and stuff like Optimax, BP ultimate etc.. is 98 RON. Normal Unleaded is around 92. So depending what petrol you're running, you may need to retune your car

The official (govt regulated) figures are: Regular ULP: 91 RON Premium ULP: 95 RON Leaded/LRP: 95 RON
Note that these are minimum figures; some distributors choose to go higher, but they're not allowed to go lower.
