Mounting in tank pump out of tank?

I got a 180sx(SR20) in tank fuel pump for free (works perfectly) so i figured i could use it in my 4ag conversion and save a few $$$
I'm just curious if this is possible? Is there some sort of pressure overflow or anything that would normally spit excess fuel straight back into the tank? I dont fancy leaving a trail of petrol behind me
Any help is appreciated, thanks...

Why not make a swirl pot, and mount the pump inside it, kill all birds with one stone

I used a vn tank and pump and installed the baffles and pump into my original tank, only cost me $200 for the install.

Yeah, I have a general idea of the different things you can do, i just wanted to see if anyone had any info on this because it costs zero dollars
A surge tank will still require some sort of riser which either means getting an external riser pump or fitting an internal one... Which just brings me back to square one... I dont plan to run a surge tank at this stage ( I'll just keep tank above 1/4)
Thanks for the help though guys, anyone else?

personally i would not fit an intank pump outside
the filter is fixed to the bottom
how r u goin to connect a fuel hose to the base of the sr20 pump
i had one in my hands the other day
and it might be easy job but i would not trust it
the money u saved with not havin to buy a pump can be spent of mounting it inside the tank properly
for around 200 bucks u could get the tank modified
to suit the pump
i think they also have a relief valve in the base or the top
so fuel will leak
they are made to be immersed in fuel
