Upgrade or Transplant? (Can't decide) Thu, 15 April 2004 04:36 Go to next message
I've been reading these forums, and there's a lot of good stuff here, and great advice.

But I'm wrestling with the decision with my KE55 Sedan:
Work the 4K, and get it sweet, or
Transplant a 7K or 4AGE.

At the moment, I'm leaning towards keeping the original mill, and rebuilding it, but I need a little help:

It's been mentioned a few times to bolt a 3K head on a 4K block, but won't this decrease compression, as the 3K's compression chamber extends into the head further than a 4K?

How does one 'Enlarge the ports' of a 4K head, without seriously buggering it up?

What's a good cam/carby/extractor combo?

Experiences with Turbo's on 4K mills?

Please forgive me if I'm asking questions that have been done to death here, and I haven't found them... Smile

Thanks in advance:

if this is your first motor build, do the 4K. easy, cheap, you break it? meh, cheap Very Happy

7K is torquey, but truck motor stroke.

dunno where you got your ideas from, but 3K and 4K are flat top piston, 3K is smaller capacity with same compression as 4K, so the 3K combustion chamber is smaller. will rasie 4K's compression to 10:1ish.

you take it to someone, or you take out maybe 1-2m of metal.. in the intake, all around.. in the exhaust, on the walls and roof of port.

cam carby extractor? what rpm range?
i have camtech 609 (235@50thou, 0.435" lift) but need different springs.

camtechs stage 3 is good... for a driveable car without many hassles.

OR, if you wanna do it once, got the 4AG... it IS better in all respects except cheapness and have to get engineered...

Cya, Stewart

...Found the info about the 'dropping of compression' when moving to a 3K head...

There's a yahoo groups message that mentions that some imported 4K engines have dished pistons, and that putting a 3k head would lower the comp...
Perhaps I'll rip the head off, and see what I'm playing with! Smile

Hmmm. a 3k head, with a 30mm welsh plug in the back...30mm valves...good little project for the coming winter months.
The 4AG is just out of my price range, but it sure would be nice...(Unless I can convince the missus... Very Happy

Thanks Stewart, I'll race around the wreckers for a 'Big-Port' 3K head.

Nige.
