Help Needed - Welding

Hey all
So we have to weld the new radiator support to the AE92 SX Hatch that me and my mate are repairing. BUT
All or our welding options have fallen through, so I was thinking of buying a welder and doing it myself. (please don't laugh - isn't this the basic premise of Toymods anyway )
SO what I have to weld is:
a) Radiator Support = spot welds
b) Extractor downpipe = seam weld (may outsource this, as these are harder)
Do you guys think this is a reasonable idea? I have been wanting to learn to weld for a while, and I will practice on some scrap metal blah blah. I am not an idiot either and know the safety precautions involved.
Unless someone wants to come around and do it. It is like a 1/2 hour job max, but I have no options anymore...

for the radiator support pannel u can use a mig, as spotwelders are pretty hard 2 come by. u can also use it on the extractors if they are made from mild steel. or u can get a arc welder but there pretty messy

mig welding requires the gas bottles though.. arc I can plug right in..
yeah, I was leaning toward just doing some seam welding on the radiator support....

get yourself a MIG for sure, they're great. they make anybody a pro with only a little bit of practice. frankly i think it's a great idea to teach yourself to weld, when you do you'll wish you did ages ago. as far as buying the mig itself, you definitely want the highest current rating possible (try and get something over 200A) for the budget, but other than that if you wont be using it much you may as well get the cheapest one you can find.
good luck mate

Hi rob
If you got just a small bit of welding(sounds like you have). Hire a mig with gas for a day you'll get a better job with gas
Just a suggestion

robST162........hire a mig for the day!!
As for gasless mig`s, well they`re just an easy to use arc welder. Not much good for light material.

i bought a SIP coppermate 170 - about 3 months ago. its gas/gasless - i have a small bottle of argon which works out to about $110 a year to own (on a hire basis) and is $50 to fill when needed.
i learnt using the gasless (flux) wire and found it awesomely effective and FAR better than arc. now with the gas its even better again.
if you're not going to use it full time or in the future go hire one - i paid ~$700 or so for mine.

good idea hiring one, when you get it before you have a go on the good stuff you want to do, get some metal of roughly the same thickness etc. and have a practice, you can play around with the wire feed, current, and gas pressure until you get a good result, then go on to the good work piece. the thickness of the metal makes a huge difference, generally it's far easier to weld thicker stuff, because you can keep the current up, without blowing holes in it. also it tends to be easiest to weld two pieces that are roughly the same thickness. anyway i guess the guy you hire it from will be full of good advise, so good luck, and if you need any help with techniques etc let us know.
cheers
