ma70 engine warning light! Grrr

I was on my way home from dubbo today, and overtaking someone - probbaly getting up to about 140-150km, and as i passed and slowed down, my engine light came on. I pulled over and turned the car off. Waited a few seconds and then i started it...light was off and i started driving again.
Probably about 1/2 hr later i did the same at about 130km, and the light came on again...so i repeated the same process.
And once again going up a rise, doing about 110, the light came on.
I had no more re-occurances of it during the rest of the day, but i also didnt push the car.
it was in "normal" mode in the auto, and is also using about 8L / 100km of fuel on the highway. I have suspicions the O2 sensor is gone, but if somsone can go further please help!
Thanks
Blake

possibly - tho too many options until you get a code...
was the engine miss-behaving at all when you got the light? doesnt he power/econ mode mostly affect gearbox behavior? or does it also try to run the motor cruise/closed-loop more often?

apart from excessive fuel consumption it was perfect. All gauges perfect, no missing, no rattles. Quiet as a mouse!
Power/norm i thought is the controlled by the ecu? I may be wrong...yeah it does control the box's changing times/rpm etc...its a weird one!

oh yeah... i was thinking about the overdrive switch... my bad..
the switch is probably used by both ECUs - on a contemporary car, the power/econ mode affect shift points, overdrive lockup as well as engine behaviour.

I would say the ecu is chucking a fix because it cant get the target cruise mixtures after X ammount of time as full enrichment/enleanment so you get a free orange light!
Replace your O2 sensor might be an idea!

Like I told you already, your O2 sensor is probably shagged. Test and replace if necessary.

hey V8... Interesting one this.
My 162 does EXACTLY the same thing. Drive it for a long as you like all week and nary a light to grace my dash, BUT stick the cruise on for say, oh, half and hour, and my friendly little engine light turns on. Even did it on the way to penrith this week.
The old girl purrs like a kitten, doesn't use any more fuel etc etc, yet we have a light.
NOW I did notice that it came on quicker when the car was "lower" on oil than when I had it topped right up. (I had lots of time to test my theories while I was busy driving all around NSW, VIC and TAS)
Now I don't want my ECU to be stuffed, as I have a Jap one methinks so I will be very interested in what you find out...

The ECU should capture the code and have it stored right? You have to short the diagnostic terminal (when car is off). Then turn the car's ignition to "on". The check engine light should flash in a certain pattern to reflect what code it has stored. You will have to look up your manual to check where diagnostic terminal is. Just grab a bit of wire about 100mm long and bridge the terminal. It's possible there is more than 1 code stored.
Oxygen sensor will be a certain code.
Good luck.
