I do know that the T50 out of the above models are the same. I am assuming the 5 speed out of the ae70 which also had the 4a-c motor is the same. Is anyone able to confirm this either way, would be a great help.
Sorry to ask a question that has probably been answered many times before.
Cheers Chris

Ok i just found some of the info i was looking for.
the AE86 has a larger output shaft, 22 spline?
but the ta22 only has a 20 spline.
also found out the shifter positions are different.
could someone explain the difference between forward and rearwards shifter position?
from this i assume the ae86 had the stronger t50. to get this box to fit my ta22 would i only need a clutch plate from a sprinter or is there more involved?
this is all i had to do when i was changing from an early model turbo gearbox to a late model turbo gearbox when i did the swap on my charade.

Ack. The clutch is the same, it's the tailshaft that changes...

And the bell housing should be different, right?

The TA-22 has the forward shifter position and so they have the gearstick going straight into the selectors, rather than the later type that the AE-86 uses, which has the gearstick going into a remote linkage and that transfers the motion of the gearstick unside-down into the selectors.
That's why a TA-22 T-50 feels better to shift than an AE-86 box.

Is there much/any difference in the strength of these boxes?
Im pretty sure now that Im just gonna stick with the celica T50 when I do the conversion.

Mate I'm not 100% sure but I don't think so.
It's just the output shaft being a touch smaller and having less splines AFAIK.
THe weak point are the gears themselves, usually the input shaft gears, and I think they're the same.

As far as strength goes, as Bill said both boxes appear to have the same size/strength gearset, but the AE86/71 does have a bigger diameter input shaft bearing, and its roller bearing, not conventional ball bearing like the '22.
I have 'damaged' the input shaft bearing on two TA22/T18 boxes with the smaller bearing, but never damaged the one in my AE71 box (with a turbo 4AG)
Cheers
Phil
