Best video codec?

Let's just say I'm... err... backing up... some DVDs.
I've been out of the codec scene for way too long and I don't really know much any more.
What is the best codec?
divx4? 5?
xvid? 2? 3? 4?!
ffmpeg(mpeg4)?
What's the best wrapper? Ogg? AVI?
Does it matter?!
Ripped a DVD in Ogg with Vorbis for sound. 2.8GB and the Windoze box that I want to use for A/V shits itself when trying to copy the file across the network.
Methinks I'll cut it down to a 2GB maximum...

before i bought my dvd burner i used to use flaskmpeg for encoding the movie with the divx codec and mp3 codec. used to take around 12 hours on my P3-500 but now i can do it in about 2 hours if that. (took 15 hours to do devils advocate and then i later on found out i encoded the spanish audio track).
you can download everything you need from www.digital-digest.com
although since I've got a dvd burner i don't bother with that anymore and just use nero.
p.s. for all the dvd shrink users, i downloaded that and wasn't sure what i was doing and I have found that the nero recode is by far the simplest program.

Err... No thanks. I'd rather not have a single-tasking OS where I'm unable to do anything else during the encoding process.
Plus it's easier with Linux.
Install Gentoo.
Type emerge dvdrip
And have single button encoding or create a script to do it all.
I've tried ripping DVDs on Windoze. One program to rip, one program for decss, one program to encode, one program to burn.
No thanks.

I would probably go with either xvid or divx they seem to have reasonable quality and good compression. As for which one of which version i don't know, i watch movies but i don't rip them.

Either way, I don't have a DVD burner. Plus I still reckon it'd be easier to just keep the Linux box and be able to do stuff whilst the DVD is being ripped.

As for which one, any of the latest ones will doo (xvid/divx)
they pretty much all come from the same code base id say
Cause there isnt much noticable difference between them

Being the tight arse asian that I am, I'm waiting for the dual layer burners to come out and push the price of the current single layer drives down to the dirt.
And DVDs are encoded as MPEG4 if I remember correctly.

Dang! I'd forgotten about the joys of that link! Haven't seen it in a while. Glad it's still there though!
Oh, I started an XVid encode last night and when I woke up, it was still a couple of hours from completion...
ffmpeg and DivX both took about 4 hours to encode the same video...
Better be worth it!
