what goes around comes around/gearbox Thu, 22 August 2002 02:34 Go to next message
hey guys

i think i might be up for a new gearbox. i know this first prob is common in most toyotas but, 2nd gear crunches hardcore when i get stuck into the right pedal. and third simply pops out or wont go in and does the same thing as 2nd. i have a heavy duty clutch (not sure on specs). i got a few quotes from guys they differ alot, from 295 to 375 but the part that hurt was the labour to put the sucker in. it is more to put the box in the actually buying it!!
so my next question is is it difficult to put the box in and/or is my box an easy fix problem. (hey i can hope can't i).
also i dont suppose someone has a 4age box lying around that aint in to bad condition that they may want to be rid of??? (again i can only hope)
oh the car is an ae82 (ae92 100kw)

thanks heaps guys

The crunching is your syncro's, you can get the box reconditioned.. but the popping out of third is a bit how you going..
To change the box yourself? No its not that hard a job.. only reason they charge so much is it is time consuming..
Im guessing you have a c52?

you can do it yourself no worries at all.
as long as you feel strong, or have a good hydraulic lift ... they're heavy bastards to get back in, and watch out for dropping it on yourself!

well she is deffinatly no more.

all fall down go boom!!!
no more moving forward, unless i want to start in thrid gear. The tired old thing went bang when it was knocked into 2nd at a large rate of knots.

well now i have three questions
1. Will a 20v gear box fit a ae92 100kw engine( ae82 car) without any probs and will there be much difference in strength/ ratios (ie will it be a slug off the start but 2. i can get my hands on a 20v gearbox for $195, this is very reasonable isn't it??
3. does anyone know roughly how much it would cost me to get the sucker put in.

i am trying to take this as a blind blessing, dunno how but i gotta try

Thanks heaps dudes all the imput is much appreciated
