hilux brake conversion Tue, 20 April 2004 07:45 Go to next message
yes i have done a search, and i found the article wich tells me how to do it. im in the process of aquiring all the bits and peices at the moment and am having problems finding the struts. In the article it said i need xt130 struts. Are these the same as xt132 struts? or other struts from coronas that are possibly more readily available. Also who else has done this conversion? and what hiccups did you encounter along the way? any info/help would be greatly appreciated Smile

cheers

Maybe they do. This conversion uses four-piston Hilux calipers fitted to Corona macpherson struts.

XT130 Corona struts are *the* most readily available.
I used RT132 struts for my conversion, and LN106 4 pot calipers.
You need to consider newer longer brake hoses, and if keeping the dust cover/backing plate, a larger cut out section to fit the bigger calipers, and panelling the raised sections flat as they rub on the rotor. I machined down the 273mm Pug 605 vented rotor to 268mm so it would not foul the caliper. Re-stamped the rotor min thickness spec on the edge. Re-kitted the capliers and replaced the wheel bearings. Used 1mm washers to space the caliper more centrally over the rotor.
Read every search thread, this has been covered 1 million times.
Mitch.

what cars it for? i'm having problems with my steering knuckles on my TA23. the RT132 struts that i'm using have a wider dowel spacing (90 mm) than my steering knuckles (about 85 mm) and i haven't been able to find steering knuckles with the right spacing and the right ball joint size. i seem to be the only one with this problem though, although i measured up a different set of TA23 steering knuckles tonight and they were exactly the same as mine so its not because of someone doing an earlier strut conversion or something.

i've tried a few different cars for steering knuckles that fit without luck, but i've got a plan that may just pull it together. its on hold though, i'm going with stock suspension to get my car legal and on the road and then i'll start on the brake conversion again.

good luck
Matt

i wrote an article for it specific to sprinters: http://www.toymods.org.au/photo//TechDocs/ae86brak es.pdf
or if you got a TA22 there was a thread in the past couple of months that went into GREAT depth.
you can use whatever struts you want, as long as they have the same measurements as the XT130 struts. its up to YOU to measure up other alternatives if you cant find XT130 ones which i find very hard to believe. i found mine on the side of the road (seriously), they were still attatched to a corona but thats a story for another time Laughing

Have you tried RA23 steering knuckles?

i'd love to......... but RA23's are few and far between over here. as in i've never even heard of one, let alone seen one and i try and keep up with as many of the celica's in the north island as i can. i know the knuckles on my old RA28 were the same cause i swapped the struts before i sold it. i'm not too worried, i'm borrowing a set of stock struts off a mate (mine are long gone which was making things really hard, i had to put some steering knuckles on loose over a ball joint just to get the car movable, no i didn't drive it like that) until i can sort all this out.
