ke-35: Getting air out of brakes Mon, 20 May 2002 11:03 Go to next message
In what order should i de-air (sorry, couldn't figure out correct term, not native engilish speaker) my brakes on -76 KE35?
My friend said that order would be but I was not so sure about his information:
Left-front, right-front, left-rear, right-rear. Is this correct?

the best way to get air out is to go, right front, right rear, left rear, left front, also have somebody helping u so they can pump the pedal, hold it down then u open the nipple, then close it, then pump up the pedal again, do this about 4-6 times each one, make sure not to take foot off pedal as u open the pedal as air will be sucked back in

so its, pump the pedal, hold it, open nipple, close nipple, pump up the pedal, start again Smile

if u need anymore help, just ask

A good way of stopping the brakes sucking in air is to put a tube on the nipple with the other end in a jar of brake fluid. Hence, it sucks in brake fluid instead of air. Its the only way on doing it if your doing it by yourself. Remember to take the lid off the brake master cylinder whiling your doing this.

start with Left Rear then Right Rear the Left Front then Right front, start with the brake line furtherest away from the m/cyl recycle brake fluid untill air is bled then change it with new stuff. How do you know air is in there and how did it get in,did you check you wheel cylinders, leaking seals will give a spongy pedal. Also try clamping lines off while braking this will pin point where the air is.

Don't mess around, just buy a brake bleeding kit. It is the only way to do the job solo and costs bugger all. I paid NZ$20 for mine, it is just a plastic hose that clamps to the bleed nipple and feeds into a little bottle, with a ball bearing in the end of the hose to create a one way valve. Couldn't be simpler or less messy, except of course for paying someone else to do it which I was quoted NZ$40 for full replacement of brake fluid.

Those kits are the same principle as the way i suggested to bleed your brakes but are better as they have a one way valve. Hence, my way was two way. It blew air and fluid out of the lines but but sucks clean fluid in. While it may cost extra you end up saving some money as you dont have to waste fuild (ie. the stuff you put in the jar). After the bleed its useless. Well thats not entirely true but whats the point putting dirty fluid back into your so you may aswell ditch it. So the money you safe on fuild and the mess u make (eg i bet at less once you knock the jar over full of fluid) buy one of those kits.

Ok here it is!!!!
First of all, for the easyist way of bleeding brakes you need.
*Two people
*Ten or 8mill spanner
*Brake fluid
*brake bleeder bottle (bottle with clear hose that fits snuggly around the nipple)

Ok first start at the Left rear. Always work in order from the furthist away from the master cylinder.
connect up the hose and crack the nipple free.
Get old matey in the car to press the peddel down slowly.
DON'T PUSH IT ALL THE WAY DOWN!!!!!!
old cars tend to build up dirt on the slide of the master cylinder and if you push it all the way down this can cause the dirt to slide in under the rubber O-rings and cause more headaches then what your trying to solve.
Back to old Matey.
just keep pumping the peddel slowly and shallow.
and make sure that the master cylinder has always enough fuild in it. You will be able to see the brake fuild pass through the hose and also see the air go out.
Once your satisfied that all the air is gone and your only pumping out fresh brake fuild, tighten up the nipple with the hose still on, and the brake peddel on the downward stroke.
move to the next brake.
before you start to bleed this one pump the pedal up till firm and then crack open, repeat execise.

NOTE!!!!
After you have finished bleeding all the brakes, Get in the car and pump the pedal out, otherwise you'll get in the car, start it up and speed off. Only to get to the end of the street and put your foot on the brake and have it go right to the floor cause there is no presure.

Benny
(hope I didn't sound to much of a school teacher)
cheers hope I helped you out
