18" rims on TA22

I was just wondering if there were any engineers out there, or people who know what they are talking about, who could help me out with this little problem i have. I have some 18" rims on my TA22 which fit fine, however i would really like to have them "legal" so i was wondering what could be done to ensure their legality and enable me to get an engineer's certificate. I am also reluctant to drive around on them for much longer because i have been driving around with 17's for the last year or so and have now recently put these 18X7's on it and it has completely stock suspension, bar some king springs. I am just waiting for something to snap, and am actually quite surprised it has lasted this long. What i would like to know is what should i do suspension-wise to compensate for the larger wheels. Will RT130 Corona struts do the job? Also are the RT130 struts a straight bolt-in job or is there chopping involved? What needs to be done to the rear axle assembly? Can i put a shortened HiLux diff in the rear end that will enable me to engineer the 18's? Any help will be greatly appreaciated.

i too would love to see some pictures of the 18's on your car BUT unfortunateley from my experience you can only go 1 inch wider than standard rims so your 18's must be 6 inches wide to be legal (in NSW anyway) and ive never seen any 18's narrower than 7 inches so unfortunateley your flaunting the law, so in my opinion do as the rest of us do. (1)Get defected (2)-swap everything back so standard (3)-pass the defect (4)-put the illegal stuff back on although there is a loophole i think(dont quote me) they calculate it from the hubs used so if you have hubs from a car that had 6 inch or wider rims you would be fine

Well i got 7inches on the front and 8.5inches on the back, and that passes roadworthy. That must suck man. I know 17's look good so 18's would look MAD. See if u can get them engineered or something. Try everything, and be different.
Thanks Ben

Thanks guys, really appreaciate the feedback. I have some picks of my car with the 18" AME Modelart Excellent's on it which i coooould show you, however i would prefer to wait until i get my new 18" Vault Krystals at the end of October! Anyway, thanks for the feed back and yeah, which struts could i put in my car that would allow engineer's for 18X7? Thanks for the help.

Hey TOY77 how did you manage that!? I think the 18's i'm getting are 18X8 so i will have to do something dramatic suspension-wise to be able to get it engineered. Who knows what front struts will fit in my car AND that will allow 18X8 inch to be fitted? I REALLY need to find something. Does anyone know what that Jamie guy with the red V8 TA22 did to his suspension? I also heard that RA23 struts fit in TA22's but are slightly higher. However they are stronger and have bigger hubs. What size wheels were fitted to these from the factory? Any help will be much appreaciated.

G'day,
The engineer looked at the and they fitted nice with no clearance dramas... so he said ok... the tyre size is also listed on my engineering certificate.
I have xt130 corona struts with four piston calipers and ventilated discs on the front.... though you are right... the 23,28 and 40 celica struts as well as the corona struts will be taller than what you have....
i don't know if there is anyway you will get room to fit 8in wide wheels at the front, mine a 7in and the is f#*$ all room left... maybe if you go to coilover front suspension.

jamie I beleive cut another inch back in the wheel arch at the front, not sure if he has done anything in the rear, I am persumming that you have all of your lips rolled and tucked.
if not now might be a good time to do it, or if all else fails flare the guards out more, and maybe hub spacers.
hope thats helped

just because your car passes engineering, does not make it road legal.
you could still be defected for those wheels, because you can't change the width of your wheelbase by more than 50mm (which usually means you can't get rims more than 2" wider than the largest rims that were available as a factory option on your car)

Lets see the pics buddy. No point talking about it. I love the 17" rims on Jamie's yellow TA22, your 18" rims must look unreal!
Cheers

(can you whack 17" Simmons on a TA22 in Brisbane without a engineers certificate?)

Hi Guys
Well i don't want to sound rude or say that people havn't done this successfully.
But when i tried a set of 18" X 7" with 205 40 profile tyres with stock suspension the front spring platform clearance was the problem,(only just like a mm or 2) they would sit on
I'd say if u are prepared to play with the offset a little like only 5-10mm they should fit or even modify the spring platform by lifting it slightly
other options are tyre sizes and maybe the rim size, slightly smaller would all help

G'day,
my car didn't just pass engineering with those wheels on my car....
they ra eon the enginnering certificate as the size wheels for my vehicle....
in the same way that my car is now a 2 seater... on my engineering cert and changed with the rta...
i think you will find that you can only increase your wheel size a certain amount... without a certificate....
other than that if you can get it approved by an engineer yuo can pretty much do what you like....
all the way through to having your car regoed as a custom manufactured vehicle, which allows you to use any size motor you want (but it has tocomply to current standards, not the ones when the vehicle was made...)
Cheers
