T50's - variances and interchangeability

Okay, this I am aware of:
3 types of T50's:
Early T-series (TA22 etc)
Late T-series (T18)
A-series (AE71, AE86 etc)
At the moment I'm using an early T-series with an A bellhousing, and constantly having leaking problems. Not sure why or how to fix it, but I'm guessing that the A bellhousing isn't 100% compatible with the early T-series box.
I was thinking of getting an A-series box and using an early T-series (forward shifter position) extension housing on it, I've heard they bolt up. Question is - would I also be able to use the T-series output shaft (20-spline) in the A-series T50?
