Pistons past the crank on a 7MGTE

OK, '91 Supra, 7MGTE. Its either change the rings, or imported engine. What I wanna know is:
Can the pistons can be taken out the bottom of the engine?
This would save me cracking open the head, and be a fair bit cheaper then putting in an import. How hard will it be to take them out the bottom?

Pete, surely you'd wanna have a look at your head if you were gunna rebuild it ??
with your hardware it would be plain irresponsible to reassemble without a once over.
Do you even know the cause of your low compression/leak ??
it could be a burnt valve or even head gasket blown between cylinders.
Has your enginealready got forgies ??
if so then pull it apart, & rebuild, I wanna see you run that 25 psi you were talking about!!!

Problem is I don't know if it has "forgies" in it or not! And yeah I'll probably take the head off - gotta now I can't take the pistons out the bottom.
Would rather look at head as well, but need more money. I've got about 4 grand for the swap/rebuild, but I want 1 and a half grand for the new computer.
The guys at BD4s (assholes) said that it was blowing 74% out of the no 6 cylinder, and it was blowing into the sump - blown rings. I'll make sure I get a seccond opinion before I spend money on a new engine.
The compression isn't too bad, just the leak in the last cylinder.
I might have the numbers ...
Compression: 155, 170, 155, 145, 165, 132.5 Leakdown test: 12%, 6%, 18%, 32%, 12%, 74%
This cost me $436.91 as they took 3 and a half hours to do that. ... factor a set of ignition leads ($173.73). The guy was a real asshole when he told me though, thats why I'm shitty with them. And the fact that it took half an hour to write out a list for them ... and they did NOTHING on the list.
Will have to switch computers before running 25psi through it, but am looking forward to it.

No3 and No 4 aren't really acceptable leaks either.
I have blown up a number of engines inmuch the same way, beleive me no matter what they tell you , any mech . that is even your best mate, it will nearly always be something different when they take the head off.
your best bet is to pull it down and find out before you make any descisions.
If there is the chance that you may build it , take it to the place you will get to o it and tell them to pull it down untill they find the problem .
THEN make a descision.

Who do u guys suggest to do a rebuild?
Is it still called a rebuild if all I want done is the rings, head gasket and head bolts?
I was talking to a guy at Wilkins Performance Engines http://www.motorsportworld.com.au/outlets/wilkins/ and he said he can do the work (and sounded like a down to earth kinda guy). Anyone know if these guys are good??
Thing is, if it doesn't have forged pistons, I don't want to rebuild it, I'll go get an import.

Any chance of borrowing a coil for this weekends cruise while your engines out of action Pete?

When my car is out of action, your welcome to borrow it .. but it won't be for a while (gotta make sure I'm doing the right thing). ... gonna have to check where the cruise is to now.
If I end up getting an import, there should be a coil on there too.

Pete, An Import motor will likely need a rebuild anyway..no such thing as a 15yr old 7M with only 40KMs on it..many come with free BHG's actually! What I would do though is to buy the Import 7M, rebuild that motor and swap over.. that way your car is off the road for maybe a weekend, not a month or more, and you can either sell your old donk at the end or use it for invaluable spares in the future.
