RAs were heavier, so you can legally put in bigger motor, and TAs have a more engine conversion friendly crossmember, but apart from that they're the same. I'm pretty sure both TAs & RAs would have come out in GT form.

If we're discussing TA23 and RA23 Celicas, then yes the engine and transmission are the only major differences. However, the TA22 is significantly different in many other areas - brakes, suspension, interior, body and wheelbase. The RA23 is definitely the pick of the bunch IMO, although some prefer the looks of the TA22.

I of course prefer the RA23, simply for the engine conversion potential and the longer front. 23s are apparently 4 inches longer in the front than 22s. I like the shape of the bonnet on the 23s over the 22s as well.

Speaking of long fronts, check out the old Datto 280ZX. The long engine bay in this old girl could fit two 2T's (one behind the other) I've already ripped off one bumper and destroyed a couple of number plates. Lucky it wasn't the Celica, old Datto's are suppose to be crashed and bashed.

There are lots of differences between the TA22 and TA23. The engine and drivetrain is pretty much the same, but the rest is quite different. The TA23 wheelbase is about 3-4 inches longer, and the front end panels are longer and not interchangeable with the TA22. The suspension and brakes are upgraded (wider front track and bigger front discs), plus the interior was upgraded significantly (mostly the dash). There are lots of other small differences, but they're the main ones.

In simpler form, the TA23 is basicly an RA23 but with the 2T, different crossmembers and a T50 box. I think there are some trim differences as well.
