Fan shroud Thu, 22 April 2004 13:51 Go to next message
I'm about to go get a thermofan for my car, and was thinking of how to mount it...

I've been told that it would probably be good to look at making a shroud, apparently would help cooling a fair bit. I've also been told that the thermofan basically becomes redundant and is a hindrance past 40km/h...

How do people usually mount their thermofans? Flat flush against the radiator? Or make a shroud and mount the fan to that? If so, do you usually cover up the rest of the radiator?

That seems to be quite popular (judging by images on Google) but I would have thought it would be a handicap to the engine and radiator because so much of the radiator is covered up?

Any ideas?

have a look for alan's pics of his radiator ... or mayebe I can get some of mine tomorrow.
what sort of car do you have?
if you can mount the thermos dead flush, you probabloy dont need a shroud.
also, the thermos will not be turned on when you're travelling 40+km/hr, so should provide minimal hinderance

Was speaking to someone today about the shroud and apparently because of the resistance of air going through the actual core of the radiator the opening at the back (in the shroud) only needs to be like 1/6 the surface area of the actual radiator before it becomes any hindrance (wow).

Have not properly measured my core yet, but rough measurements say it's 12" from top to bottom, so will probably get a 10" fan (the Davies Craig 10" fan is 11.5" tall including the built in shroud). The radiator is only slightly wider than it is tall so should be heaps more than 1/6, should be more than enough Smile

So will probably make one similar to the one in the pic above. Shouldn't be hard, just make an aluminium box and cut a big round hole Smile

Ben: I'll measure everything up and maybe give it a go, if I have dramas I'll let you know, but THANKS HEAPS for the offer Smile BTW Hows that wiring going? If you need help I'll try to come round once my car is on the road (hopefully in the next week or two)

Shrouded radiators work more effectively than others as they have air directed through the radiator, definately use some type of shroud. Try using the standard shroud for the radiator, and fitting the thermo fan to that opening, it will cool much more effectively than just the thermo fan on the radiator. I have a KE radiator shroud if you need one too?!

Clint: Don't have the original shroud but have access to one, but looking at the original one I can't think of any way to mount the thermofan and have it seal, which was why I didn't pursue that avenue. Will try to make one out of aluminium like:

Most definately won't look as nice (was going to rivet the corners together...) but it should work Smile

Thanks Smile

But what is the use of a flush mount shroud and a flush mount thermo??(sorry if thats not the case with yours..looks it tho) demuire that is directed to...
it makes the fan no more efficient than if it was without a shroud at all.

If someone wants to host pics ill show the ma61 cooling system im designing. 4 core chev radiator with 2 gt4 fans JUST for cooling..not incl 12" DC fan for a/c.

fook's is how mine is setup - fan sucks air thru entire radiator face rather than just the fan area...is also helpful at low airspeeds (e.g. in traffic)

Yeah the shroud isn't as deep as I'd like it, but that's all that space permits. It's actually 30mm deep, which should be enough considering the fan itself covers more than 50% of the face of the radiator...
