Hi all,
A friend of mine recently bought an imported 4A-Gze for his AE-86, fresh from japan with 90,000 kays on it. Problem is one of the cylinders has next to no compression. is it possible that a valve is stuck open or the like???(surely it couldnt need re-ringing already.....!!!!) Also there is a shitload of wot looks like old oil dried up and caked all over the cams. is this normal?? is it likely that all it needs is a strip down and clean?? Any help is appreciated

that caked up shit is probably the result of no oil change for a long time, and if that is the case then anything is possible!
I think if you take the dipstick out and turn the motor over, preffereably with a starter motor i guess you will be able to see if its blow by.

hey there, if i was you i would take the engine back and get warranty on it, from what u have said, it has had very little oil changes witch causes the sludge up, it will be like that thru the whole engine, it wll need a rebuilt to clean it all up, this is what we do at work, with no compression in 1 cyclinder it could be a stuck valve or bent valve, blowen head gasket, normal problems

if it were a stuck valve i would say the motor is rooted. if one of the valves stas open it is able to be cliped by another valve and hit against the piston. in thatcase you would at the least eb up for new valve, guide possibly piston, rings and maybe even a rebore depending on the extent of the damage. if he can take it back and ask for another or if it was privately imported i would say a full strip and all measurments checks and new bearings and rings while your at it.

I thought the 4ag and 4af were not prone to valves hitting the pistons, well that's what a newpaper review of the ae92 said, so I take it with a grain of salt.

it has been decided. we are going to rebuild. minus supercharger, and plus a turbo.by the way i was thinking a garret t25 or t28 with wolf management. wot do yoose think is the best setup. nothing outragious is wanted.....just enough grunt to get out of trouble if u know wot i mean

Sometimes with import engines like that, they do have stuff all comp when you first bring them home - mine was like that on 2 cylinders. But when you start them up and let them run for a while, they often come good and can still lead long useful lives. After a few minutes of running, mine went from having 2 thirds of stuff all comp to 180psi all round, and has stayed that way ever since. And they often have that crap built up all over them from no oil changes...
But hey, who am I to argue, good an excuse as any for a rebuild + a turbo. Lets know how it goes!
