do you really want that dowel floating around inside your motor???
try a magnetic pic up, or even and oil change, it might float out....

did you ring nev last night?
I was just wondering wouldnt the pin go into the bottom of the timing case or the middle of the timing case more likely than in the sump?

i had to pull both xmembers off and drop the sump and i got it out, but now i have worse problems.
i have chronic valve seat recession, i put a 0.03mm under the lobe to see how much valve lash i had and it wouldnt go under I2, I3 or I4, that means its holding the valves open, UH OH SPAGHETTIO'S, new head
yes i rang nev but he couldnt help till late tonite

LOL
seriously, ive done exactly the same thing. i thought, hey, im only 150km from home, its only Xmas eve, its only 1030pm, why not try changing my cam timing at this dimly lit servo!!
uh oh, spaghettiohs... plonk, lost the dowel into the timing cover somewhere! managed to dodge together a quick fix with a piece of 5mm bolt i had floating around in the boot, cut down to size with some wire cutters.
later, on xmas day, i tried my darndest to fish the dowel back out, to no avail - its now down 10,000km residing in the bottom of the timing cover with zero problems.
meanwhile, i think youll find 5.1mm stock steel rod is an exact replacement (its a common dowel size). i can send some up to you, but its hardly going to arrive tomorrow
cheers
