3S-GTE lifespan with/without intercooler? Sat, 24 April 2004 15:52 Go to next message
I heard a troubling story that an MR-2's engine without an intercooler only lasted about 10,000km's with normal driving, thus leading me to query the longevity of a typical 3S-GTE. A general question - how important is intercooler choice? Commonsense dictates that you use the right intercooler for the conditions that you want to drive your car in...

Do 3S-GTE's have any known issues about them, regarding short lifespans, etc.?

Thanks.

Well if some idiot was driving the thing around with even the stock big toe sized cooler, chances are it was detonating and rattled a piston to pieces. Any engine, no matter how good it is, will soon die if there's a IDIOT messing it up!

Laughing Very Happy heh heh, idiots Very Happy

for ANY turbo or SC motor, if the intake temps are not controlled, and the mixture either pre-ignites or detonates, then the life of the engine will be drastically reduced, and may even be measured in SECONDS!!!! Shocked

it comes down to tuning and intake temps.

if you drive like a granny with no IC, then it might last forever, if you drive like a dickhead with the worlds biggest intercooler, it will die anyway, if you have no intercooler and drive like a dickhead, it will die sooner...

the intecooler choce is ALWAYS important..
the IC MUST be capable of cooling the intake charge 'enough' for your driving situation... simple as that... how much is 'enough' is a totally different matter.

Yep, i'd be looking at factors other than intercooler if an engine only lasted 10 000Kms. The best record I'm aware of is a rally motor build that lasted approx 500Kms after the owner killed it through detonation - he said he couldn't hear it!!!
