 can car rego expire before the end of the month???

was out with a friend cruising to perth with a couple of supras and in the review mirror about 200 meters away we could see a police car. So for about 30km around streets, around corners, down the freeway these cops were following us, then about 10kms after we got off the freeway they pulled us over.
They told my friend to turn the car off (bitch if you have a turbo timer) get his license, the usual stuff. Then they say to my friend (the car i was in) and my other friend in the other supra that we were dragging on the freeway, even tho we were sitting under 100 in the same lane.
So then they breatherlised my friend then told him that his rego expired on saturday (it was 1am sunday morning) and said we had to call a tow truck up and tow the car back to his house.  Then they said "we just told you your rego expired and you have to get a tow truck to tow your car home so were gonna go now"  they didn't wait there or nothing.
But the only thing i want to know here is can rego expire before the end of the month, since there still like four more days till the end of the month???
this is in W.A. but still wanna know other states laws etc.

don't know about WA but in queensland it can my rego on my camry runs out on the 5/6/2004 and i think you have 1 month or 2 to put rego on it after it runs out or you have to get another roadworthy to re register the car don't know for sure though about the roadworthy thing but rego can run out before the end of the month in qld

i thought you have till the end of the month till you can drive it and two weeks after it runs out to pay?

not in queensland when you get your rego renewal form it will say that if you do not pay the amount be the due date (the date as which the rego expires) the vehicle is illegal to drive usually my rego renewal form will come about six weeks before the rego runs out so i will be getting one soon oh yeah and if you are late in queensland paying your rego they put your rego up for being late

Yep, your rego will expire on a set date, this is due to 3rd party insurance cover. If you friend had run someone over that morning, he wouldn't have insurance to cover his arse.
