New rims - bad or good? Mon, 26 April 2004 06:59 Go to next message
I finally found some rims to fit my mk2, but I'm still in 2 minds about them. What I've basically found so far:

*) They're a little slimmer (225 as opposed to 245), but slightly larger rim diameter (16" as opposed to the stock 14"). The steering has obviously lightened up considerably, but I'm still deciding if this is a good or bad thing. The reduction in tyre wall means less flex, am I right? I have yet to push it through some bends to see if I can feel a difference.

*) There looks as if there's a little more room around the inside of the rim now, so a brake upgrade may be easier now (a good 1" clearance around the caliper).

*) Lastly, I'm still trying to decide if I like the look of them over the stock rims.

I've chucked a picky in of the new rims so you can see for yourself - I'm sure most of you are familiar with the stock rims.
Opinions and comments?

They look nice, but I'm not sure if they suit the car. I can't say if they are good or bad from a technical point of view though.

What about tyre costs, i've always been under the impression that tyres to fit the stock rims are quite expensive.
The rims look good and i think they suit.

Thankfully I've never had to get new tyres for the stock rims, but I've heard the same thing - that apparently there are only a few different manufacturers to choose from, and they can be expensive. As for these rims I have on now, I think it's relatively simple to get rubber for them, and there's quite a large range available.

Thanks for your comments too guys - all feedback is definitely appreciated.

I tend to rate them, but would have to see them in the flesh to tell.

May i ask what offset they are and where the hell you found rims for a MK2 at??

P.S pretty sure i saw your car at maquarie movies the other night

I dont want to be the negative one but i dont think they suit the car. They remind me of a black swift gti when i see those rims.

Either way, you look to have a very nice neat car Smile Thats all that matters!

I like them, but I don't know whether it's just I'm liking the idea of bigger rims on an MA61, or the fact I like the rims. Personally for me it's an improvement over the factory rims, but you could do better.

Yes actually, I was at macquarie the other night - one floor down from the top. There was another black ma61 nearby that was driven by a mate of mine as well.

The general concensus seems to be that the stock ones look better - but does that outweigh the performance gains from these new ones? Can anyone vouch for that fact that there ARE actually performance gains? I mean, I know the theory behind it and that it should be better, but is it actually that noticeable?

Hrmmm... I should really take my baby down the old pac high and see for myself. Just a little reluctant with double demerits in effect.

Yeah the 2.8GT badge was the giveaway........i was parked on that level, same row as you, one back from ur illegally parked buddy. 3 Ma61's in close proximity was a tad random. The black supra has some serious issues with the left rear, doesnt quite look right!

Anyways, smaller profile tyres on bigger rims should mean the car handles better, give it a hammer thru some corners and you will see.

Oh, and...

fatmr2: thanks for the compliments Smile

Blacksupra: Glad to hear I'm not the only one who had a nightmare of a time finding rims! I believe the offset of my new rims is +10 (I THINK).
Either way, It gives me about 50mm clearance from the struts at the rear, and about 5mm clearance from the struts at the front. Heaps of room around the guard and whatnot, and stacks of room inside the rim for way bigger brakes and discs. No scrubbing anywhere, and I went over heaps of speedbumps to test Smile

Models I've found to suit the mk 2:

Speedy hyperfang 2
BSA (#248) - available with 16" or 17", both 7" wide.
The usual custom jobs (like simmons, etc - only too expensive for me )-:

Yeah, Brad's black ma61 is a bit of a pig. It's had a VERY hard life. Pitty you saw my car that night too - it was totally filthy Sad

And I really need to do something about that 2.8 badge. It's such a lie. Know where I can find a "3.0" badge? Smile

i don't think that they suite the car, i like those supras with the the older original rims. u have the mean looking guards and should have some rims to accent them. i think that u should put more than 15' rims with some nice rubber.

Yes it will be easyer to steer, but it will also be harder to put the traction down when u need it.

Oooo - have you done a 5 stud conversion- or do ROH sell those in 4 stud as well? Is the offset on them low enough, or will you be using the good 'ol spacers?

Don't forget you'll need rubber as well Drav - that's just the rims... isn't it?

And keep the comments coming! All input is appreciated Smile
I know the general opinion seems to be they don't really suit the car - but should I keep them for the performance gains, or are they just THAT ugly?

Yeah, Blacksupra's rims look nice! The square design matches the back of the MA61.
