Really need help with AE86

I will apologize in advance for my ignorance.
I have finally purchased my first car, a fully stock Sprinter(AE86). I am going to do an engine conversion to a 4AGZE. But I've just started learning about cars and my knowledge is scarce.
What should I do to my sprinter before i do the conversion?
should i change the brakes or brake pads, springs, tires etc? If it's not too much of a hassle can someone list the parts or mods I need. I'm not looking to build a drift car though.
Oh and my last question is, do I need an intercooler when i do the conversion to a 4AGZE.
ThankYou for your time,
steve

Ill try:
# Intercooler, yes, if you want the engine to live. Not 100% neccessary but if you got 1 stick it on the front of the car.
# Brakes yes, to pass enginneering. You may need rear disk too, thou inm not 100% sure on that.
# Fuel system, whether it be surge tank and pump or cut open the standard fuel tank and insert baffles and efi pump.
# Standard t50 will hold the power barely, if its in decent condition. Although constant hard launches will munch the t50.
PM EVOSTI as he is driving a 4agze powered sprinter, There are other people but im not sure of their names. and search, ill start the ball rolling.

There are more but that'll get the ball rolling.
Happy reading

you could just put a gze in straight up but you wont get the best from your car. i would do it like this:
* BRAKES! MA60 upgrade is the cheapest, then hilux/corona then RX7 series 4. i have hilux/corona which is cheap and stops good but is heavy. read the article here: http://www.toymods.org.au/photo//TechDocs/ae86brak es.pdf
* suspension. the no-brainer upgrade is the whiteline works kit. not overly cheap but a very good package. you could try source parts seperatly for cheaper but you prob wouldnt get a setup as well matched as the complete kit.
then you get the motor. there are MANY discussions and articles on how to put it in so do a search.

Either way ... you'll be looking at lotsa $$$ to get it to where you want it to be. Then you'd realise that you could have bought a turbo S13 or series 4 RX7 for that price and have a car that's faster still.

perhaps the best thing to do is to start planning what you will need to get the chosen engine going, and start collecting those bits that your car dosent allready have..
for instance you will definately need an electric fuel pump of some description and then youll either need a baffled tank or some anti surge device. Also things like ignitors and coils to suit the engine and a loom if they dont come with the engine when you purchase it.
unless you plan to do the conversion immediately some other things you can do to get it ready might be to upgrade the suspension and loom at upgrading the front brakes if your planning forced induction.

Generally the difficulties with a 4AGZE are:
1) Converting one to RWD - obviously you could look around for a Rwd 4AG manifold
2) Getting a strong gearbox as mentioned earlier about - W5X gearbox. Don't expect your T50 to last unless you drive like a granny
3) Hilux diff - something beefy which can take the power - the standard S series or even a T series diff may not be suitable.
4) Piping may be a hassle.
Check out the tech section at:
www.club4ag.com
There is an article there on installing a 4AGZE into an AE86.

you cant use a RWD manifold on a gze, you need to either add a spacer, cut and shut it or modify the s/c outlet pipe go get it to work.
it will cost you lots of money but if its what you want then i say go for it but dont expect to have much change from $10K with gze, brakes and suspension done properly.
you can get away with stock diff and box but you gotta be gentle, my diff's still going but i ride the clutch off the line and dont give it full throttle or itwill either snap the diff or sit on the spot in smoke so... hehe

having sat in the trimmed ass buckets in the back of an RX7, sprinter seats are much much better, but still really bad.

just buy the half cut and sell what you dont use. dont try and buy an engine/loom seperately, definately get the half cut.
and sprinter seats arent too bad in the rear, a shitload better than a JZA80 where does all the room go in such a big car?

I think $10k for engine, brakes and susp. is at the high end. If you are prepared to take a while and learn and do almost everything yourself and look around for bargain parts you could get away with at least 3-4k less than that. Although I don't like to do the sums, I think I was out of pocket about $6k for all that plus aftermarket ECU and tuning and wheels and tyres.
The more you do the cheaper it gets.
Also, a T50 should be able to handle the power at least for a while. Mine just eats synchros, but I cane it. And the stock diff will do to start with.

What is an engineer for? Do they take a look at the engine and certify it or something?
And who else needs to approve of the engine conversion?

to make sure everything has been done right, no loose ends, corners cut, emissions o.k, and all the rest.
