Eye Spin

Hi,

I'm putting a 1j in a raceboat,

The question I'd like to put to the noticeboard is:

What can you tell me about the "Circuit Opening Relay" in the factory wiring diagram for the 1JZ-GTE?
It's more complex than a simple relay, with what appears to be an extra coil, a capacitor and a resistor.
A green wire joins it to the 'FC' terminal on the factory computer. Why? Is there some signal that the computer expects to get through the FC terminal?
Is it necessary to run the Circuit Opening Relay, or can I do without it?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Dave

Loosecannon: Your gonna create hassles for yourself if you don't run it.

The capacitor that is built into it holds enough charge to keep the fuel pump circuit going for a couple of seconds after the engine is shut down.

When i get home i'll have a look at the diag, and get back to you.

The Circuit Opening Relay has two functions. 1) Shuts fuel when the engine stops (for safety) and, as Pete mentioned, 2) holds the contacts closed for a few seconds to pressurise the fuel rail.

The short answer is that the ecu will still operate without the Fc signal if you choose to use a standard relay instead of the COR. For reasons of safety though I would recommend using the factory relay.

Thanks Grant
where can I get an factory COR from, or can I get a generic relay with a timer in it?

If it's for a boat, don't sweat it. Running a standard type relay off the ignition switch would be O.K., not super safe in the event of an accident but what's the likelyhood???

Oh BTW!! I need to see some pics of this boat. Nice.

Don't even bother trying to run without this relay or some equivalent as you then have to switch it off at the end somehow.

I tried without it and ran into bother. As soon as I fitted it it all work correctly and the fuel pump ran on for 3 secs.

This relay is nearly as good as the the dual mode fuel pump relay. As soon as the boost comes on the fuel pump relay switches over to a higher speed. Now that was interesting because as soon as the motor hit boost it died. A quick rewire solved the problem but not before some troubleshooting to find the actual problem.

Thanks for the help guy's
I'll try and locate a relay with a timer, or something simlar, if I can't get the factory one.

Pete.

the boat I am putting the engine in ( well it's in now) is a "Classic hydroplane" I restored it in 1995 and I put a 350 chev in it, this was my first raceboat, I have now moved to bigger, faster boats (As you will see on our website), But since having some friends who have Soarers and supras with theses engines in them, I've decided to give the old boat a new lease of life, this boat ran 127 mph in 1962, and won the Australian championship the same year, also it was the third boat to run over 100mph in Australia

This is the boat it's going in

Our other boats

Our newest boat, we hope to run this year

This website is out of date , our new one will be up soon

Thanks
Dave

You can buy a COR from just about any Japanese wrecker or new from Toyota. Run the fuel pump directly from the COR, not through a fuel pump relay and dropping resistor as per the diagram. This is only really required for in-tank pumps that are not designed to run continuously.

If you need any further information feel free to ring me on 0409 572904.

I've called a couple of importers, no luck getting a COR( both told me to use a standard relay), would a Auto elec stock one of theses relays? also where on the car (Supra or Soarer) is the COR located?? this might help.

Also I have a fuel pump ( inline)out of a VL commodore, will this be OK to run this engine? I've been told it will be OK.

Thanks again for your help!!

Hi Rob.
As soon as I know what it looks like, or where it is on the car, I'll let you know!

Thanks for the offer!

Hi.
If I can't get one from an auto elec( COR), would I be able to use a COR of another type of car?

Thanks
Dave
