Engine Swapout / Upgrade advice requested! 18R-G vs 18R-C

Hey all,
After some friendly advice...
I have the oportunity to purchase a possibly not so perfect Toyota 18R-G engine block & head, as well as manifolds, twin sidedraft solex carburettors, and a set of extractors, to switch into my 81 Celica.
For those of you not familiar with Toyota's and their engines, this is the 2 litre twin cam engine produced in the late 70's, which is rated at around 150bhp. It would be replacing my standard 18R-C engine & head, which is the single overhead cam engine with single carb, rated at 96bhp (of course, this is factory suggested).
This engine can be difficult to source, and I have gotten prices from Half Cut importers at over $1000, and upon calling a decent Melbourne Toyota supplier, I was priced $880 for the block and head, without them knowing if it had manifolds.
The current price has been suggested to be around $300, however, im looking for imput as to whether or not this seems like a decent deal, given the head may need some work for it to be of use.

Do you know what is wrong with the head?? I mean is there gasket problems or tapping valves. most small things are relatively easy (read cheap) to replace/upgrade.
The solex's may well need a re-jet
If the engine runs as is you really don't need any more than a new exhaust system (unless you have on already that you can cut & shut)
I'm sure The Witzl will no doubt enlighten you on the subject shortly, being the resident 18R-G Guru.

18R-G Engine not currently running.
Missing a water pump, and possibly 1 or 2 other things.
As per above, engine would come with Extractors, and I have 2" pipe through to freeflowing muffler from the 1st muffler back, so the last exhaust restriction is the midpipe with the first muffler in it.
I currently own 2 18R-C's, again one is not running, but I've only had it for 2 weeks and not enough time to test it.

You shouldn't have any probs with the exhaust save getting it welded.
It's those "few other things" that maybe the hard/rare things to get ie thermostat housing. There are regularly people in the parts for sale getting rid of 18R-G parts so getting cams, valve springs etc won't be hard to get. Water pump... I have no idea if it is interchangeable with an 18r-c item.
But It would be a definate upgrade to an 18r-c if properly tuned
Ahhhh the roar of side drafts

I did the 18RC to 18RGEU swap - the results are not too bad. The 18RG had better all around performance and was ultimately a worthwhile conversion - I just wouldn't expect it to set your world on fire. I would however suggest that you go for the injected version, purely for the better driveability.

There shouldnt be any problem with the waterpump. Sharing the same block between the 18R-G/C means most things are interchangable.

I would really only look at buying a complete working 18R-G, they have a tendancy to be a bit bithcy when compatibility of 18R-C parts when the little things go wrong (eg, timing chain stuff) and that ends up costing mega $$.
There are a couple of top shelf 18R-G's for sale in the "Parts For Sale" section here on toymods right now, theres a nice race once too
I seriously recommend going the 18R-G install, 18R-C is just a pile of poo in comparison.

yes i did the swap from 18rc to efi 18RGEU, and yeh it was a bit of a pain messing around with the standard computer wiring side of stuff but in the end it was worth the upgrade for sure. drivability is awesome it will pull away in 4th and 5th at 60 with ease.. no stutter like the 18rc carby...
but did cost a fair bit in parts and time chasing them up..
well worth it tho to hear/see the celica rev out from 5 to 7 in the stock tacho
but no dont expect to get sick in the stomach from the g forces im afriad unless its a worked motor then lookout..
