general aus sprinter views?

Hi, after doing a quick search of the forums for 'ae86 problems' and reading a few threads I saw that most posts were about serious or rare (well they seemed rare) problems that people have found, and do not know how to rememedy.
Being 18, and an uni student, i don't want to buy a sprinter and then realise that there is many 'notorious problems' that occur to almost every sprinter.
I was thinking of getting a 4ac aus spec sprinter.
I have no intention of drifting this car or being the next takumi, i just want a cool car thatll go, and i can muck around in from time to time.
my question is, to the people who have owned or still own an Aus Spec Sprinter...
-What do you think are the pro's and cons of a sprinter?
-What problems have you encountered with the 4ac? actually, what problems have you had with the car at all?
-When things have gone wrong, has there been much trouble sourcing replacement parts? or have u been able to mix and match between other toyota models?
personally i think this type of car is a great choice, because it seems relatively chieap on insurance, aussie car, small engine, with the only downside being 2 door.

for a daily driver i believe sprinters r pretty good. Fuel economy is great and there's pretty much not any real problems - they are corolla's after all.
Generally I've found the real hard to find bits are the Jap exclusive bits. ie. lsd, n such. So there shoudln't be any worries if it's just an A to B car.

Great car. Very practical. Only problem may be that everyone is looking for panels and lights after unfortunate incidents, so good parts like that may be harder to find. As said above, the really rare stuff is the Jap import stuff so no problem for you.
The 4ac is indestructable and if you do somehow destroy it you can always pick up another for $50.
Only problem I had was the dash lights dying. Easy to fix and nothing big anyway.
Similar and cheaper, but not as nice, try a T18. I know guys who regularly buy them for under $200.
Good luck
Hen

being 18 and all, a 4ac equipped sprinter would be awesome i think.
and over time (3-4years), i'd either change engines and put in an lsd, or just sell the car and move on to bigger horizons.
now i just have to convince my folks into letting me get a 2door car,
because according to them "2 doors are more expensive to run" and "sports cars attract the police"

Im 18 and have owned 3 sprinters! 2 i currently still own. I've been driving around in my aus spec. The 4ac is realiable and very economical, very good if you need to drive really far to work/uni..etc. maintainence would be the same as a normal car. Only thing i can see being a problem are parts.
Only common problems i can think of are sagging doors. Where the bushes in the doors wear away. And also the dash lights as henn mentioned.

standard sprinters are old, slow and shit. parts are hard to find, expensive to buy.. they're completely over-rated.
on the positive side, my 4ac didn't blow smoke, or leak.. the only problem it ever had was the carby needed a reco.

I have that problem, atm i just tap the LIGHTS Dial everytime and that works great, thanks for ae95 for telling me that minor detail, but how did you eventually fix it so it always worked ?
Thanks Henn,
Also, im 16 turning 17 in october, i bought a sprinter not long ago. There is hardly anything you cant fix, its a really good daily driver too, and i find it really fun to drive.
Matt.

I've found working on the thing a breeze, even having no mechanical aptitude at all. Ripping the motor out is heaps easy, so if you blow something up you just tear it out and replace it for $0 from the local bush/car graveyard.

Would a TRD lsd for a jap 86 go straight into the aussie one?

Yes, the hole rear ends(as in complete, disc to disc) swap, but you can't put a TRD center into a aus spec diff, wrong housing, don't line up right.
AS for driving a stock sprinter and never been in a GZE or Turbo one i found it great, nice a suttle. cop's just think your another rolla driver. But the bug bit and now i'm halfway throught the engine swap(all i need is a clutch). There nice cars to go from point to point easliy.

As Nick said, watch out for the rust/bog dude.... Especially in the bootlid and bottom of the doors/sills.
