1ggte in an ra23 Sat, 24 August 2002 01:57 Go to next message
ok i just have a few questions for those of u that have done this conversion or similar. how has it affected the handling of your car (is it to front heavy).

i know some of u may not want to answer this but i'm interested in knowing how much it costs.

i have overestimated the prices for everything to make sure i can afford it if things go wrong but i'm interested to see the prices for:

1. motor, g'box and computer (if u used stock computer)
2. how much u spend on aftermarket management if u went that way.
3. fuel system
4. for those of u that didn't put it in yourselves how much did it cost to get someone else to put it in and wire it up (even though i'd prolly do this myself i'm still interested).
5. brake upgrade
6. intercooler (whether upgrade or one from front cut)
7. new radiator if need (is it needed)
8. diff when old one goes (i'm guessing 1500 for borg or similar)
9. engineering
10. tailshaft shortening if required.
11. pretty much any other costs u encountered.

and for those of u that have done it yourselves i'd be interested to know how u fitted it (yes i have read the article in that section but it does not go into much detail).

i know its expensive but i'm interested in doing this next year during my time off from uni so any info would be greatly appreciated.

cheers simon

The fuel system costs a bit, 300 for an efi pump and 100 for the lift pump, then the surge tank (I made my own) and all the hoses/filters etc. prob over 500 bucks for the fuel alone!!

Also, I did't use a new radiator, I just had mine flushed and had the outlets moved, cost like 50 bucks. My temp guage never goes above 1/3.

Tailshaft shortening isn't required, although you will need a thermofan. there is no way of getting the old fan behind the radiator.

I probably got away with about 2 grand to do mine, although that was with some luck and i haven't upgraded the brakes yet.

thanks for that info mate, i thought the fuel system would be around that mark but thats alright. hey did u put it in and wire it up yourself to get it done for 2grand. did u put an intercooler in , was it from a front cut or what adn how much for the engineering around 500 bucks isn't it maybe a bit less or more i dunno know.

I have no brakes so no engineer yet, I can't help you there.

I did everything my self, except the exhaust. I got an exhaust place to hook it up.

The wiring wasn't too hard (but I'm still having troubles - not sure if they're to do with my wiring or not yet!) Installing it was easy to. Just make sure you have all the right bits, ie 1gge mounts, the right sump, all the little bits like that cuase they're what get you down.

so to fit it in u need 1gge mounts not the gte. whats the difference don't u need to modify the ge mounts whereas u have to shorten the gte ones.

what size exhaust system u get and how much. might just keep the one thats on there i think

Hey. good luck with it. I am doing this conversion in a ra40 at the momnent. Very similar i think.
This is my budget and so far it is pretty close to the mark. Slightly under.
Engine = $ 2100 delivered from sydney (front cut ga20 soarer)
labour = $1200 (getting it professionally installed)
Fuel pump and new lines = $500 not using surge tank. submersible pump.
Muffler = $200 3in chrome from autobarn (on sale at the moment 4" tip)
Exhaust = $300 mandrel bent 3" (maybe more with high flow cat)
AutoElectrician = $400
Extras = $600 this includes pipes and radiator remounting and shit like that.
Air filter = $220 apexi pod

Am using standard engine management.
Am machining the disc and putting performance pads on the front until i can afford bigger conversion.
As for engineering. In queensland if the engine is the same size then u just need engineers aproval with cost about $50 or so. Dont even need to do any brake upgrades. But i am going to for peace of mind.
It cost tons to do any conversion like this and u will NEVER get your money back so plan on keeping the car. If you really love your car then i sugest do it but if u are unsure just sell it and buy something else that is faster.

Even if u find mounts that u don't need to modify do it anyway. With larger engines it is always better to mount them as far back and as low as u can. Helps weight distribution and clearances.

geeze you guys all seem to get away with it so cheap compared to what I do..

My engine cost $895,
Gearbox $400, Bell housing $100.
Turbo $2400
Haltech Ig5 - $800 (including some bits)
BOV - $360
Wastegate $1050

Hell that's a total of $6000 before I even think about putting it in the car..

And I haven't even got the Gas system for it yet.

Shit stradlater! If I were going for a big turbo, external wastegate and aftermarket management then mine would've been 6G as well!! Shit it'll go though!

Bogstoka, I was kinda lucky in that I got my engine for cheap, although it was an auto and had a heap of k's one it. The price all depends on how much you get the engine for. People keep saying that they're becomming more expensive so you should ring around.

Looking at Hellman's list, you'd save over 2 grand doing the work yourself, (you could probably also skimp on the 4-inch tip!)also, you'll feel better about it when it's done because it'll treuly be all yours!

Hellman, is any form of cat included in the exhaust price? Is that an average price for a 3-ince system?? I need a new exhaust.

That price is through my mechanic. It includes a cat. Probably cost 500 or so if ya dont know someone.
I wouldn't attempt a conversion like this unless u knew what u are doing or had some good friends.
And the muffler is chrome and came with the tip.
