My blonde moment

I must be the only person who's unable to change a diff in under 3 hours.
Had a two hour long blonde moment while I was changing my diff on Saturday...
Spent the time cursing about how much silastic I put on last time ('coz I couldn't get the diff off no matter what I tried).
After two hours, I figured I needed to get my mind off the problem, so I sat down and started adjusting the drum shoes...
And out pops the driveshaft.....

Bahahahahahaa.....
Don't you hate that....
I spent 2 days trying to work out why the engine wouldn't come away from the bellhousing (my first engine removal) only to find 1 pissy bolt hidden up behind the clutch fork

I can relate to that ... until you see one taken apart (which just plops out when you get all screws out), you'd reckon it's take a fair amount of yanking just to get the two apart so even if you missed one screw & didn't know, you'd still reckon it'd be stuck and continue pulling on it like a silly monkey & wondering why it won't separate.

while we are on silly stuff, I have to put my diff back in on the weekend. Any pointers for not doing silly stuff?
I was just going to fit it, bolt it back up, bolt tailshaft on. Then put one axle in, (fit brakes etc. on one side.) Then tip the car on an angle and fill the diff with oil. Then put the other axle in and fit brakes. Whack the wheels back on and go and drop some 2 wheel burnouts J/K
thanks

lessons ive learnt changing diffs
wipe with a clean rag the inner housing to ensure theres nothing inside ( ie chewed off teeth )
corn flakes boxes make good gaskets for a cheap runaround yet its worth the extra $$ wether you use a home made or propor gasket to use gasket goo
axles tend to coem out easier using the drum covner eversed to pull them out
watch out for springs and small bits that are under load
make sure the tailshaft bolts are done up tight after completign it alas you will think youve blown another one from the noise
use a soft drink bottle or similar cleasned out with a hole cut in the lid and a tube shoved in it to fill the diff with oil
a pinch bar/long old buggered screwdriver will come in handy to get the diff out if its been sealed for a long period fo time
oh and ensure the cas supported very well while doing this as youa re doing most fo thsi WITHOUT the wheels on and rocking the car

I always like how many names you can call yourself in a 30sec period!
My fav is changing the oil while talking to friends and wondering why there is oil pouring all over the floor!
