What does Pinging sound like?

Hey all,
My 22RE corona is about ready to go in for a retention after getting the head fixed (again), and last night it sounded a bit like a diesel motor when driving it.
The head has been shaven twice now, so i'm guessing compression is a bit higher now and therefor the timing has to be changed and just wanted to know if the noise i'm hearing is pinging.
What does pinging sound like?

kinda like a rattle dude, different from a "knocking" sound which is quite a deep solidish sound   it is a little higher.
basically, a rattle
you will hear it particularly under load in a higer gear with low-medium revvs

It's the sort of sound that once you know it you can hear it.
Alot of people don't know what pinging sounds like, I did have a good mp3 of a car on a dyno with it pinging but lost it.
On severe pinging it's like coins being dropped into a tin bowl.
You can hear low rev pinging alot daily at traffic lights and NA cars going up hills that run really crap fuel or have not been tuned or serviced for years.

When pinging is not too bad, it's a bit like putting a straw in a fan, when it gets worse it's a bit more of a harsh rattle. Doesn't really have a metallic clanging noise to it, unlike knocking/piston slap.

It kinda sounds like ping ping ping,
I would have said that it sounds more like ting ting ting but then it would be called tinging, so I guess it is ping ping ping.

See Monty Python's - "The Meaning of Life", I believe they have a whole segment about a "machine that goes Ping" 
Seriously Asher... can you describe what you are doing to get this noise? Does it happen all the time, or only when you accelerate hard, etc...??

if it only happens in high gears while going up a hill or acceleratring hard then its pinging..u might be able to fix it ur self by undoing the 2 dizzy bolts and moving it to the correct timing by using the timing gun..iof u know someone with one that knows how to use it..if not get a shop to do it

p.s i have alot of trouble with knocking and pingin  hence why my engine is in perices right now :'(

my 22RE also sounds like a truck. i think it just needs new tapets. I doubt that they are adjustable so you'll prob need new ones

not trying to be boringly technical . but my cressdia (when running shitty fuel...godamm backward country bumfuck idaho no 98 octane overpriced service staion) 
well my cressida pings at 1/2 throttle under medium accelaration . why ...leaner mixure at this thottle position and boost is actually slighlty higher than full throttle ...
(loading turbos).
at full throttle it has NEVER pinged and i use detontion detection doovilacka
so you cant always use the up a hill or hard acceleration theory .although this is the most likely condition
hmm clinking marbles together ....yep sounds dead right to me
although clinking (holding your toungue) marbles together kinda hurts
