Hey,
Just wondering what the story was with dropping a 20valve 4age in to a '97 starlet.. anyone know what may be involved with such a conversion? Any url's would be great, thanks!

i'd rather not go turbo is the short answer
thanks for the post mister ae
hare motorsports (who apparently specialise in starlets) offer the engine, but they don't detail what sort of other work would be necessary to get it all to gel (and be road legal)

alright i got some info from HARE motorsports on this conversion
here is a quick cut and paste:
Quote: |
It is not an easy upgrade. We still have not performed it yet as we are
still building the engine (requires lots of money). We can do the install or
supply the parts, but the job requires:
1. Custom mounts to fit the engine
2. We don't know yet if the gearbox of the starlet will fit, it should,
3. Complete custom engine bay electrical wiring (~$2,000) as the engine is
sequential injection and has extra features such as VVT-i
4. New engine ECU, MoTec costing around $5,000.00 including installation,
5. Ancillary work also needs to be done, Air Filter plumbing, fuel lines
etc....
So although its an excellent upgrade, engine standard around the 150kW, it
will be quite expensive, so be prepared to spend alot of money. We are
hoping with our race engine to get around the 220kW, but that will cost us
around $50k.

soooooooo.................... how about that 4E-FTE?

Christ..
a $5000 motec? that puppy would want to tune itself for you!
Also as far as I know the 20 valve silvertops don't have vvt-i. Neither do the blacktops am I correct? And also the 4age 20valves are like 115kw not 150kw, I don't know what engine they are talking about, maybe a forumla atlantic engine..
You would need an upgraded fuel pump, but I doubt the lines themselves would need to be changed.
It probably wouldn't be that hard to wire it up yourself, your a smart boy Namanja
Maybe see how much a 4e-fte half cut is and make a decision.. Either way if you're doing an engine conversion its gonna cost you a bit for insurance..
give these guys a ring and see what they are charging for half cuts these days.. Its an old list so don't blame me if the numbers are wrong or something...

Good friend of mine, Dave Loftus is the only one I know of in Sydney.... Not and easy conversion.

which is owned by Dave..... This car was at one of our earlier Dyno days

No... they BOTH have VVt-i-> Variable Valve Timing, you may be thinking of VVtL-i->Variable Valve Timing and Lift.

dont bother with the 20v conversion, if you want more power you have a few options
1. the 4efte engine and gearbox bolts straight in
2. we have turboed the stock 4efe and they are good for about 125hp at the wheels with on of our TD04L kits fitted, my girl friends car make 127hp on 12psi boost on a 130,000km old 4efe with a microtech, water to air cooler, and NA 7mge injectors. this is as much power as you will get out of the stock NA head, fit a turbo head and you will make a lot more!
3. build a hypo NA motor (expansive!!!)
the stock 4efte with a microtech and a little boost will make around 135hp all day every day, with one of Td04L kits on the 4efte they will make 155hp with the stock ecu (risky), put a microtech on and you will see over 170hp at the wheels with ease and easy low 13sec times ( a customer ran 13.0 with the stock ecu and TD04l on slick tyres)
one of my customers makes 200hp at the wheels with a GT25, 7mgte injectors, microtech, etc, we are building him a bigger motor now to handle 30+psi boost and will make well over 300hp at the wheels,
we do more work on starlets than any thing else,
if you want more info give me a call on 0412 044 456
heaps more info on the starlet forum at www.twincam.org
here are some pics of my misses car with the stock 4efe in it
