Aftermarket ECU / Piggyback ECU

I'm about to undertake a project to partly rebuild my 4A-GE out of my AE86.
I'm putting in some new cams, getting some head work done as well as looking at increasing the compression slightly.
However, I'm also wanting to get an aftermarket ECU or even just a piggyback ECU to remap the ECU to make the most of the mods I'm completing.
Has anyone used an ECU for a similar application that they could recommend me? There's a few out there, but as with most things reports are varied and it's hard to find out accurate information. I find the best way is to go straight to people who are already using the products.
If anyone has any suggestions, could you let me know.
Thanks.
- Also, if you've got one to suggest, could you let me know how much the ECU cost you?

Well, first thing, don't worry about the piggyback idea - because the ECU doesn't control much other than fuel and timing anyway, so there's not much point keeping the original! As for what brand to buy, generally buy the most expensive you can afford *decides not to apply any bias/prejudice this time*

Is it possible to piggy back a 4A-GE ECU out of an AE86? I didn't think it was (similar to first gen 3S-GEs).

I don't really have any bias about aftermarket ECUs as most are made here in Oz. But I will say if you can afford NOT to use a Microtech computer, do so.
Flame on.

There is no reason that a piggyback style ECU won't work with a 4AGE. Something lik ethe Xede processor should do the job quite nicely.
Otherwise, Mr Shin summed it up pretty well. Lets face it When did you ever here of the best performance being acheived by the lowest bidder ??
If you want to contact me directly I can offer you some more opinions but am reluctant to do so onthe forums. I work at a Performance car workshop but refrain from "advertising" the business on these forums. We tune ALL types of ECU so can suggests what best for your car and your budget. NOT just a particular brand we sell.

piggybacks work excellent.
Apex safc is about the most popular this side of the globe. Folks use it with a hacked or bigger mafs + injectors and its not uncommon to make 400 hp to the wheels from mitsubishi 2.0L motors. sr20 guys make ~330, same method. 4ag ~250 on map ecu.
Greddy Emanage does fuel and timing, but costs more.
I plan to use SMT6 from perfectpower.com on my ca18det and 4agte. I know a couple guys running it. Works well, adjusts fuel AND timing and costs the same as the Apex safc... hard to beat. Need a laptop tho
