I have a W58 with the slave cylinder on the drivers side. It is the original unit from the 3T GTE, and I think that I seen another like it at SSS yesterday. The other 2 x 58s that I have both have them on the passenger side.

The bellhousing is the deciding factor.
Depends what motor you want to put the W5X behind as whether there is a bellhousing to suit....
Some info I know,
MA61 (5M-E -> W58) passenger side
SA63 (2S-C -> W55) passenger side
GA70 (1G-GTE -> W58) passenger side
Cheers

just pulled the gearbox out of rt142 to find it's on the drivers side.. I'll guess I'll just see if my 1g to w58 bellhousing fits.

There is no real rule of thumb here, it is bellhousing dependent.
And, I would not worry about it too much, as you can alway bend your clutch line over to the other side to reach it.
Cheers,
Mitch.

W58's (for the most part, some did come with alloy sandwich plates!) can be differentiated by the steel sandwich plate (do a search, a few pics to be found).
Otherwise, count turns of the inputs shaft / turns of the output shaft turns in the gears to work out the ratios...

I did but the problem remains of differentiating between a w55 and 57.

Turning the shafts is about the only way I can think of being able to find it out.

As a side note, a think the G series gearboxs are the same as the W also. eg, G52 etc in Hilux's and HiAce, early Tarago. You use the same repair manual for the G as the W series gearboxs. I have not found the difference yet. Some new HiLux's have a W56, others a G55 etc.

Don't the G series boxes have different linkages though, ie for column shift?

Some do some don't. HiLux always have the stick coming out the top of the box, Hiace and Tarago have linkages from the side of the box. I have not worked out the corelation yet.

Steve, if you believe Matti and Helene's website, here they are:
G52 R 4.743: First 3.928: Second 2.333: Third 1.451: Fourth 1: Fifth 0.851.
PS got money! Cheers.
