Strength of 5M rods Sun, 02 May 2004 02:34 Go to next message
anyone know what kind of numbers the 5M rods are capable of handling? and for that matter, is there any difference between the 5m-e and 5m-ge in terms of their rod construction?

obviously the yanks have been turbo'ing their 5mge's for a while, has anyone heard stories of rod failures from these things?

has anyone got some 5m-e or 5m-ge rods lying around that i can come have a look-see at?

cheers
ed

I am aware of a twin turbo 6MGTE putting out about 700 rwhp on stock rods (well they might have been shotpeened). It blew a head gasket Laughing.

Anyway, look for Jake Reed on the Mk2 Supra Yahoo group and chat to him.

by my rekoning, the 6m would have the same rods as the 7m (which from memory are noticebly beefier than any 5m ones ive looked at) so a hi-power 6m doesnt quite count

actually, my memory is failing... the 7m rods *are* beefier, yes? (god you'd hope so...)

any ideas on the good ol 5mgte?

sustained output figures without failure?

damn justin!

sounds like a plan. im really just after the rods... is it a GE or E ?? ive got my fingers half cossed that the 5mge rods are a bit beefier than the 5me rods - from memory the 5me rods looked pretty humble (common GT - you should know this one!)

i really really dont want to have to go buy new custom rods Rolling Eyes

I know Sean used MTEU rods in his 5MTE. I know someone who has a whole short block or two.

mteu rods would REALLY be on the berserk end of the length scale...

stroke is 75mm vs 7m's 91mm, so by rights, the mteu rods would be about 8mm longer, which is awesome, but god knows what youd have to do with the piston design to squeeze the pin that much closer to the crown Confused

this is of course assuming the rods ARE a different length. maybe the mteu pistons are oddly sized... whod know.

and yes... that person with the dusty old mteu short block needs to know that im still interested in its guts (much like i always have Smile )

edit: do you know what pistons sean ened up runing in that 5mte ?
did you just use the stocker 5me rods and pistons in yours?

TRD 3SGE gudgeon pins are 20mm, so there's your first mm. Just another 7mm to go....

It's there, you just need to get it to Sydney.

Sean ran some (?)Venolia forgies for a static CR of 7.4:1.

If I were you, I'd wait till next year and get Argos. Lighter, stronger and whatever length you want.

ca18de pins are also 20mm, floating type, internal C clip reatined. (83.00mm stock bore dia)

custom rods *could* be a goer, we'll see what turns up in the meantime. im not sacrificing the purchase of a house next year for some argo's + mahle + trd bits Laughing

see what kind of BK dodginess we can string together again...

oh dear, have a look at this pic... stock 7mge piston with maybe 0.8mm machined off the compression height. so say, what, a stock height (from edge of pin) of about, errr, 22mm??? No No No

aint no way on gods good earth one gets 7mm out of that sucker!! (not without going to a single compression ring anyway!)

3mm would be doable me thinks.. must be wary how close the top ring come to the chamber too, i hear n2o gets a little hot Rolling Eyes
