A few MkIII questions. or a better title "what the hell are these for?"

Ok here goes, I have found 2 things in my supra interior wich i can't work out what they are or what they do. They have me stumped.
One of them is a button labbled "A/D" wich is right next to the fog light switch. Turning it on doesn't seem to do anything noticable. My best guess was that it was an "automatic dimmer"
The other thing is a small sensor (looks more like a tiny camera lens) wich is located on the passenger side right up in between the dash and windscreen, directly under the wiper. I tried to take it out but it's connected by wires and looks like it's supposed to be there for some purpose. but what purpose? My best guess was it senses when it's raining and makes your wipers go on. Or it was the sensor for the "A/D" button for sensing when to auto dim the headlights.
It's bugging me, and i won't be satisfied until i find out what they are.
anyone?

hehehe, the 'spy camera' up on the dash contains a light sensor... mkii's have them as well, but be fucked if i can figure out what its connected to.
i too suspect its for some auto dash backlight dimming feature, or auto lights on or something...

Just for info! The UZ and JZ Soarers, also have the same light sensor. The headlight switch, has a position which appears to do stuff all! However, if you have your headlights on during the day, and switched to this position, and then check your lights you will find the haedlights are not lit! (found this out when doing an alternator load test)
Drive into an underground car park or an area with similarly low ambient light, and hey presto your headlight will automaticaly turn on!
Don't you just love the Toyota Engineers!
regards Chuck.

Its actualy for the aircon to detect strong sunlight thru the windscfeen IE heat and it turns the aircon up

The toyota name is a 'solar sensor' and does as alan said above.
Used for the climate control function, MKII's have another ambient sensor in the center console, don't know about MKIII's, but they are used to determine the temperature whenthe system is set to 'auto'.
My mums avalon has a solar sensor, so they are still in use.

ok interesting stuff with the solar sensor, i figured it was related to lights or temp control (or a spy camera that looks up).
what ChuckLandwehr said sounds pretty right aswell, but i'll take your word for it Allan/Black supra as you both own supra'
s.
It's a shame becuase my air con has no gas :(-
by the way Allan, my steering wheel does has all the cruise control buttons on it, are you tellin me that A/D switch turns the cruise control on/off aswell? Do you have this switch on yours?

I don't believe its an electrical gremlin as mine does the same thing. I suspect it has something to do with the sequence in which you turn on the car, turn on the lights, turn off the car, exit the car (ie. door opening/closing)... but I haven't bothered to double check yet as I just turn the lights out
I also have both the solar sensor and the A/D (Auto Drive) button in both my GZ20 and GA70. Push the button (which will light up) to enable your cruise control, then use either the lever on the back side of the steering wheel (on the GZ20) or the button on the right side of the steering wheel (on the GA70) to set your cruise speed, and then on the GZ20 push lever up to accelerate, push down to coast, and pull towards you to cancel (or alternatively touch the brake) on the GA70 (from memory, as I haven't driven my supra for a coupla months, a mate has it) the top half of the right hand button accelerates, the left hand decelerates, and the left hand button cancels... but someone may wish to confirm/correct me on this...

whatever was said for the gz20 was spot on bro
i went home and checked
for the soarer owners the solar sensor is located on the aircon vent next to the front windscreen near the passenger side wiper
its a small little black rectangular piece of plastic looking thingy
as for cruise cotrol loonies right
also loonie
if u wanted to slow down but still use the cruise control on the soarer
just hold the lever down and let go when u reach desired lower speed and it will still cruise
cheers
