Sydney to Melbourne Mon, 03 May 2004 13:12 Go to next message
Any advice on where to go, see what todo?
Im driving down for 4 days sometime in July

My group came 2nd place in a dance competition now were battling out melbourne!

Im thinking about taking the corolla sx down there..
Having never driven long distances yet any pointers or advice?

Will be driving down with a full car. So whats the best route to take? Will a the old 1.6L Handle the trip?

How much oil should I bring along? Coolant and what else?

Hmm.. I still need to find a place to stay.

Hope to meet some of you guys down that way and maybe show us sydney siders how you guys have some fun Cool Cool

take the inland route from the m5

takes 10 hours

heaps of premium fuel stops
heaps of servos

take oil and coolant if your car is a POS

boring as all hell tho

air the tyres up 2-4 psi higher than you would normally have them.
check all fluid levels. Best way down is follow the big arsed highway ALL the way down.
depending on what time you're leaving, there are some good food stops along the way, especially in albury (but I tend to get there before they open).
If you dont take long trips regularly, then I *definitly* recommend a long stop at albury for food, coffee, a 10 minute walk and a lounge around thinking of nothing. there's a nice enough 24hr truck stop/diner/petrol station just on the sydney side of albury (I think it's the sydney side). This will stop you falling asleep (no matter how good you feel - do it!)
If you're used to long trips, you may want to do it all in 1 go.
how much oil and coolant to take along should depend on how reliable your car is, and how much oil/coolant it usually uses Smile

forgot - munchies and powerade/coke/V are essential

and I'll second the "don't speed" thing

Especially before, during, and after the canberra bypass (has been a cop there every time I've gone past it), also the golburn bypass sometimes, and also in albury where the speed limit changes.

you wont miss it
when the big green signs say you're getting close to albury, there's a HUGE petrol station on the rhs of the road - cant miss it Smile
the coffee's ordinary, and the food average, but after 5 hours on the road it tastes mighty good Smile

Haha, i do Canb/Melb runs all the time in my GZE and its really just a whole boring trip.
The worst bits for cops are around Goulburn (foresty area), outside Yass (bushy), Gundagai, and before Seymour. Thats all the places ive seen cops hiding that i can think of.

As for servos, there are a few good ones, BP on the way into Albury (Ultimate) is where i normally fuel up. Or there is a Shell in South Gundagai next to the Maccas.

Other than that its pretty much the same as normal long distance.

there are 2 fixed speed cameras between Yass and Albury. one a few k's north of Colac, and one a few k's north of Tarcutta.

they might not be working... then again they might be... plenty of big shiny signs leading up to them, too.

and be nice to Gundagai and Holbrook Highway Patrol. i sincerely recommend this...

When you get down there go to La Porchetta's(i think thats how you spell it) anyway its damn good pizza and pasta place and at good prices. Best place to get good food for a dinner out.
