Hey Guys,
I'm losing my licence on June 8th!! For a 3 months , so what i need help is that i'm going to sell my car in this time and keep the money, save up and buy an Mr2 Aw11. I will be looking for a non-supercharged Mr2. What is the going rates for these and is there anything in particular that i would look for that would be occur if i did buy it?(eg common rut spots?, bits that fall apart pretty easy?, etc) Also is the insurance high for these or are they pretty average in the scheme of things?
Cheers

Good choice if you want some fun on a budget (but not concerned about boot space).
Firstly, id ring around and get some quotes on insurance, especially since you are going to loose your licence. Ive got reasonable price on comprehensive insurance, but that is without any traffic offences( although i am a 20yo female). Id guess that it would go up, especially on a sports car.
Look to pay up to $10k for one in good condition and low km's.

mines $1800 a year full compro for a work to the tits Gt4 , no limits on modifications as long as they are legal ..

As for aw11's you could always get in contact with the Mr2 clubs to see if members have any for sale

Not even. You could get a SC one for that money.
As for insurance.......lets be honest man, you aint going to get any for cheap cause of your driving record!
In which case, buy the Sc one put in a good alarm and have some fun
For what you will pay in insurance you could pay the car off in 2-3 years!!!
spend that on a turbo

Ok thanks for your replies. I don't want to get a supercharged one because i have heard they are more expensive as well insurance would cost me even more then it will cause of my suspension. $10k for one? do you mean SC or non-SC? I heard you can get reasonable non-SC for around $6k, is this true?

$10k will get you a Sc aw11
As for a good one for $6k???? Not too sure about that. Although, if you do manage to find one at that price i suggest you get it!
If insurance ends up being too expensive you should get the SC. You wont be paying to insure it anyway so you might as well have a fast car

Price: The weird thing i found was that people were expecting you to pay as much for a n/a aw11 as for a s/c aw11, why would you pay that much for a n/a when you could get the s/c
Things to check: Common spot for rust is wheel arches, Where the spare wheel is put into the Frunk. Damage to the front lips is common (damn basterds of things), the targa tops leaking is common (i've got a small leak passanger side) but that is common for most targa toped cars anyway.
Insurance: due to insurance companies being nazi's, Im paying 700ish for 3rd party fire and theft (off the top of my head) with rating 6 (even though i should be on rating 2 or 3 at worst).
for more information you can try, http://www.board.mr2faq.com/ <--- International mr2 board, heappppppppps of info there. on the "yahoo groups" site sign up to the "MR2" board (australian mr2 forums) also check out http://www.mr2club.com.au

$300 for 3rd party, 600 for fire/theft, 1100 for full comp
on the downside, its $1600 excess due to sports car, driving history and age.
another downside is market value for an 88 SC is $8000, if it gets stolen its $5000.

Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking of only getting 3rd party anyway. So it should be around the $800 mark(hopefully). Well it will be a while off so i should just start saving. Then sell my car and concentrate on getting the Mr2. And not count down the days until i get my licence back. Does anyone know if when you are suspended from your licence on your P's that when you get them back you get all of the points back or are you still on 0?
Cheers

The deal is that you only get delayed by however long your suspension is. So i can go for my green P's 3 months after i should of been able to. Oh well at least i will still have my licence.

must be different in your state. In victoria say ya lost ya licence for 2 months, you have to do without your licence for 2 months plus ya probation period gets extended for 6 months.....

Im in the same boat with my ST165 and this is why i reckon full comp. is a bit of a rip off for cars in this price bracket. I reasoned that as long as you drive it responsibly you shouldn't need comprehensive insurance. I also had no idea AW11s were worth that much, going on prices for import SW20s i have seen recently you could get a grey import shipped and complied for about 8.5k or there abouts...

yeah but the sw20's goin for that price are usually the first models (not the best), and in farked condition. Plus why would ya buy a sw20 over an aw11?? unless ya want "looks" but then the sw20 being better looking then the aw11 is debatable. Personnaly i'd rather the aw11 anyday
