ae86 short stroke rear shocks Wed, 05 May 2004 23:44 Go to next message
Hi - I picked up a set of kyb rear shocks for the 86.

I currently have kings low springs in the back, and when i installed the shocks - they are almost af full extension when the car is sitting level - so if i bounce the car the shocks bang as they extend to their limit.

What springs can i get for the 86 that will suit these short stroke shocks - as far as i know kings dont make super lows for the 86.

step 1
take shocks out. put old ones on for meantime.

step 2
take out springs + measure the freeheight (uncompressed height) of the springs. do front AND back. now decide how much you want to lower the car and take of that mm value from your current height. make sure front and back are equal freeheights

step 3
call KMAC.

> K-Mac Suspension
> 366 Princes Hwy Rockdale 2216 Sydney NSW
> Ph (02) 9556 1799
> Fax (02) 9556 1507

step 4
ask for 5.0 kg/mm AE86 rear springs in your preferred height
ask for 7.5 kg/mm AE86 front springs in your preferred height

step 5
install and enjoy your new solid springs

(warning. ride will be solid and possibly unconfortable with these rates. if your a pussy then lessen the kg/mm rate. i run an 8.5kg/mm front and a 6.5kg/mm rear, solid but not impossibly hard. 7.5 and 5 is just good.)

If the car is the height you want it? then you have a couple of option, either get another shock (with a longer stroke) or measure the length of the body of the shock itself, then measure the open length of the piston (shock shaft) if they are about the same the shock is too short, but if they are different then they may have stroke limiters in them, this is done to stop the spring from becoming unloaded over bumps and falling out, or another option is take the shocks back to where you got them and see if they can help you!

But there is another option too, you can get springs reseated so send your springs back and they can reset the ride height to what you want. I am pretty sure Kings can do this for you!

Is there a mob that will do this in brisbane? I need to get rid of the "modified" springs in my car.
