Little bugger of a problem with the temp gauge

This one has had me buggered - I need ideas! Just done a 'conversion' (of sorts!) on my sisters car - AE92 4AFC to 4AFE (old engine died, 4AFE seemed the cheapest/easiest replacement). Anyways, I had no real problem getting the loom to work fine except for one issue - the temp gauge! I've replaced the thermistor ('sender') twice, replaced the instrument cluster, but the bloody thing insists on reading full hot nearly all the time. When you first start with the engine fully cold, it will read cold for about 20-30 seconds, then move up to full hot. Pull the wire off the sender and it goes to cold (so I've got the right wire...). The wire at the back of the dash measures 70-80 ohms to ground, which to me seems reasonable, and is the same at the sensor. The only thing I don't get is that I can't see a voltage regulator on the wiring diagram - and I've been looking for crook earths etc. anyone got ANY ideas?? please?

all gauges have 12 ign and then earth thru the temp sender
but some gauges have an extra earth wire
make sure it is earthed
check on bakc of guage if it has an earth

Sure greg, send me any relevant wiring diagrams, I've already got copies of some of it, but anything else/different 'brands' can't hurt! cheers...
